Google FI use in a hotspot

I recently moved from my old very expensive cellphone system to Google FI.

I found out that I can get a Sim card free to use in an old hotspot I already have. My cost would be $10 per gigabyte on my phone bill.

Does anyone have any experience with using hotspots while camping?

Does it use a lot of gigabytes to look at email, Amazon, maps, etc.?

My Google FI came in handy on our last cruise as we could use it on any country we visited. It has worked well in the US.

Best of all we average $52 a month for two phones and tax.

Ask a friend to recommend you if you change and you both get $20 off your first bill. No contract or fees to change over.

Depending on where your traveling you may not have fast cell phone service, or service at all.

DW and I still both work... Retirement for us is another 6 years away, but we are blessed that we just need our computers. We both have dual-monitor setups in our Seneca and have been out six consecutive months on the road. We found that WiFi in 98% of the RV parks is not reliable, we rely almost entirely on our various Hot-Spot's we have. We are very concious of our data-useage while we are connected (I have network tools that monitor/log this in our Seneca.

On the road, connected M-F while working, we averaged under 25gb/month on the T-mobile network. We also used a Verizon Hotspot when we did not have T-mobile coverage and found that we can burn up 10gb in data in three days because they account for data differently.

If G-fi is only charging you $10 to activate a spare Hot-Spot... I would go for it, just to test it out. The data rate for G-fi is reasonable and I am really interested in seeing how it works out on the partner networks. The price is very attractive.

If you're using it to stream video, you'll eat up gigs quickly

To clarify my first statement.

Google FI 10 a gig. It does not charge for sim cards or for any use of sim cards in hotspots or tablets.

I also forgot. On 2 phone setups the max charge is for 10 gigs use so the max bill would be $35 for 2 phones, $100 for 10 gigs and tax based on your state.

You can make your phone a hotspot and try it. I think they report tethered data use separately from the phone or you phone would separate it.

My son who works on the technical end of the cell phone business told me a hotspot would process data faster and I could also send and receive texts or calls.

GoogleFI bills seperately but no monthly charge for the hotspot, only data used out of my cellphone package.
