Honda or Yamaha generator

I was planning to purchase the Honda EU2000i this spring and I see the Yamaha EF2000ist has very good reviews as well. They both are close in features with the Yamaha having two additional features that I think would be handy, that being a fuel shut off so you can drain the carb and a fuel tank gauge. I really like Honda products but the Yamaha has me thinking with the two additional features. I would like to get your thoughts on this.

Before you decide. Go and talk to the selling dealers. I found out that dealers in Canada are charging PDI on top of the retail price and its taxed too. Check out prices in the US before you make your purchase.

These are the Cadillacs of generators, they are both quiet and reliable. You really can't go wrong with either one. In my case, the wife liked the color blue, so we got the Yamaha.
If you think you might need to run the air conditioner at some time, you should also consider the Champion 2800WT. It is available in both Gas and Dual (Gas/Propane) fuel models for $699 and $999 respectively.

It sounds like you are happy with the Yamaha, do you find the fuel shut off and fuel gauge beneficial.
Thanks

The Honda dealer I visited said he would waive the $30 fee, I have not checked out Yamaha . With the low dollar $1000 US is about $1300 CDN so it looks like I will be waiting for them to come on sale here.

If you plan on spinning your 13.5k BTU AC, I would suggest neither of the models you mentioned and move to this gem:

Yamaha EF2400iSHC | yamahagenerators.com

A little more expensive, but it'll spin the 13.5k BTU AC w/o needing to parellel. Its still an inverter, still a Yamaha. This is the model I would buy in a minute if I wanted to power my camper modestly, quietly, and still spin the AC.

Yes you are right if I wanted to power the ac that would be the one to buy. We seldom use the ac unit so is not worth the extra weight for me to lug around.

I bought this model for this reason, probably 6 years ago for old camper with 13.5k AC. New Jayco has a 15k AC. I had to add a capacitor to the AC to start it with the 2400, but it will start it now. We may only use it 1 trip a year to run AC, but at those times it is a godsend.

We've been happy with ours. No problems, no issues and always starts quickly (unless I forget to turn on the fuel).

I also have the Yamaha EU2001 and was purchased from a dealer that sold both Honda and Yamaha. After questioning the service department as to which one came in for service the most often, I chose the Yamaha. The service manger said it was a toss up between the two. That being the case, the choice became easy as the Yamaha was $100.00 less than the Honda.

The gauge and shut-off are nice.

YES, very much so. Because of the fuel shut-off, I don't have to worry about gas sitting in the carburetor. When I am done with the generator (I run 2 in parallel when running my AC which I have 1 on the roof) I turn off the fuel and let the carb run dry. The fuel gauge lets me see when the talk is getting low with out having to take the cap off and look.

The fuel shut off tipped my favor towards the Yamahas. Ethanol is the bane of our carbon fuel existence. It does terrible things.

I also got a great deal on a pair of them here.

Yamaha Generators | www.yamahagenerators.com

I picked up the pair with cables, oil, stabilizer, and free shipping for under $2K

They work great and everyone loves how quiet they are. Good luck.

I'm eyeing a Champion 3400 Duel Fuel Generator.. ($1050 on Amazon)

I'm not too keen on lugging around something nearly 100lbs however.

Hence, the reason for buying two 2000's. Half the weight and I only need to bring one out unless I want to run the AC in the summer.

Also provides the added security of redundancy.

The Honda shut-ff knob turns the fuel off and kills the ignition at the same time.

So there IS a fuel shut off on the honda's, but you can't run the fuel out of the carb because the engine turns off.

I've let my Honda genset sit for 3 months without sta-bil and never had issues.

face value: $.02

I was evaluating the same two units a couple years ago. I went with Honda because it has a fuel pump on board and will pull fuel from a larger external 5-6 gallon tank for extended use. The Yamaha was not able to do this at least with the models available a couple years ago.

We had a Honda 1000 bought in 2006 no problems, sold it in 2015 for 400.00.We have a 2000 now works fine a little heavy. Not sure if the extra 100 bucks for the larger plug was worth it.

We had same question last year and ended up with Yamaha 2000 for the 2 options you mentioned. Have over 100hrs on it and love it. Easy start, quiet, and I do use the fuel gauge and shut off feature. You can not go wrong with either but we are happy with blue.

Those reasons are the very reason I brought 2 Yamahas. Had them going on 3rd year now and love them.

Naah, If you put in a Micro-Air Easy Start, you can run your A/C on (1) 2000 watt generator with no problems. Ask those of us that have the Micro-Air Easy Start .
