Spare Diesel Gas Can

My wife and I are leaving for a cross country trip and we're a little worried about being able find a gas station that sells diesel out in the wide open west. Just for peace of mind I was going to carry a 5 gallon container of diesel in the back of the truck in case we find our self low on fuel in the middle of nowhere. We usually start looking for fuel at about half a tank but I'd like to carry some extra anyway. Kind of like wearing a belt and suspenders because I just don't want to get caught with my pants down, so to speak. Can anyone who does the same thing recommend a particular can that they have been happy with? One that doesn't leak and is easy to use to get fuel in their vehicle. Thanks for your help.

I use racing gas jugs for all my fuel needs. They don't have the crazy EPA spouts on them. Easy to pour.

Actually, this looks like a good one...

I carry a plastic 5 gl. yellow diesel can with a battery operated transfer pump to avoid hoisting the can a risk pouring dsl all over myself. The pump is rated for fuel and will empty a 5gl can in about 2 minutes.

I posted a question regarding fuel cans a while back after being very dissatisfied with the junk you find at the auto parts stores these days. Forum user Midnightmoon pointed me here:

NATO Jerry Cans For Gas/Diesel/Kerosene

I picked up a 5g red can and must say I've been very pleased with the quality and ease of use. I had used it a couple of times with my RAM and have already tested it with my new F-250 to ensure all is good before we hit the road soon.

I have carried a yellow 5 gal Sceptar 00004 plastic can in the front right box of the truck since 2008 and have used it maybe 5 times. When you get in to the hills your estimated travel distance indicator seems to go down quicker when you don't want it to.

It has never leaked a drop. It can be hard to access, being under the Bacflip box cover folded back to the last panel at the rear of the truck cab, when towing and on the side of an interstate or Canadian 400 series hwy and it is slow filling the the truck, trying to hold it up at the proper height.

I have on occasion carried 2 of them.
I lock them in the box with a cable and dudley combination lock to stop the opportunists. They're inexpensive as well.

OMG... We are in the wide open west...

We buy diesel from the local 7-11 and maverick c-stores. EVERY station sells diesel that sells gasoline.

It's easier to find diesel fuel, than to find beer.

I ask this and did carry a plastic yellow diesel can for about 1500 miles but I to fill up when I get down to a half of tank but find out that it's wasn't a problem I was able to fill up with no problem but I did brought my can with me just in case. So if you just want a piece of mind I would buy at least a 5 gallon can and fill it up and take it with you, also look at your map and download google map on your phone to to see when are the stations.

Wow these are not cheap but they look like a quality can. I need to replace some older cans and may consider these....
