1/2 ton towable

Are the half ton towables actually safe to pull with a half ton truck? Was looking at the 24RE at the Tampa RV show

The half ton is for specific half tons... Not the run of the mill.
Ordered specifically with heavier tires, rear suspension and rear end ratio... Like everything else, buyer beware. You need to beware of the payload capacity on the truck. You can change tires add suspension upgrades but If you need to buy a truck buy a 250, 350, 2500, 3500 for hauling a 5th.
Heavier vehicle can control the 5th better. Bigger brakes, bearings axles. Money wise that special ordered half ton is going to be in the same price point or very close when you get done.

Just my 1/2 cent of knowledge.

Do you have a truck? If so, check your payload sticker. You must subtract the truck passengers and hitch (maybe 100 lbs). What do you have left?

Roadrunners comment are 100% on. I pull/stop my 10,000 lb. 5er with a "souped up" 1/2 ton as he indicated. I'm rated to pull 13,400 lbs. with a payload of 2450 lbs. Most all half tons don't even come close to those specs. My F150 is just about a 3/4 ton, even better than some. I'd get a 3/4 ton if I was in the market but check the specs on that truck too.
Happy RVing,
Jeff

We pull a 24.5 CKTS with a 2018 F150 (5 liter V8 - 10 speed automatic - no extras). Only problem I experienced was with braking on Whiteface Memorial Highway into Wilmington. When we returned home from that trip I had a look at the brakes.
The rig had been returned to Lippert for warranty work, prior to this trip, which included axle replacement. Turns out that no one thought to check brake adjustment as part of the repair. Adjusted the brakes to spec and no further problems.

We have towed various trailers in the past with various tow vehicles and have always had to beef up the tow vehicle suspension. I was prepared to do this when I picked up the 5er and was surprised that when connected the truck sat perfectly level - love it. The pairing of the 5 liter with a 10 speed transmission has provided excellent towing compared to past experiences.

Jayco discontinued the 24.5 CKTS after 2019 - unfortunate as we find it ideal for us (retired couple) and it really is a HT compatible rig.

That's a lot of trailer. Out of curiosity, what is the payload on your truck? On my F150 (with some bells and whistles) I have a 1690lbs of payload.

We talked for a short while about buying a F150 but by the time you add all the additional features needed to haul a 5th wheel safety, including over the mountains, and the cost, it was better to go with an F350 again that will easily handle the weight etc.

For a 5er or TT longer 32 ft. in most all cases you don't have a choice to upgrade to a 3/4 or 1 ton. For the occasional travel with a TT stay within limits of the equipment and what you can comfortable handle. A 1/2 ton truck with a 30 ft. TT in a heavy side wind is definitely not a comfortable Norm. For a daily driver you want the comfort of a 1/2 ton

150/250

Only reason I am asking, is seeing the Grand Design 150 line, which appealed tone, jayco has the one similar in size and weight, wife hates driving my 150, so a bigger truck means no chance of me just being a passenger when we go camping, I want my turn of being able to enjoy that extra adult beverage lol

e.g. a Jay Feather with GVWR 7000 lbs. is under normal conditions easy the handle with a 1/2 ton - But in windy conditions of 25 - 40 mi/hour it is better to park it, because the ride in not enjoyable. The possibility of an accident increase with wind conditions.

We sold our half ton and upgraded to a 3/4 ton. Bigger brakes and more payload were the most important issues, besides double the fuel tank and driving range.
We drive over a lot of mountain passes, I need to keep my family safe.

The problem with 1/2 ton trucks is they are simply not heavy enough when you start towing heavier and longer trailers. No mater how much a 1/2 is rated to tow they simply don’t weigh enough for larger trailers.

1/2 ton towability

My '13 1500 Ram crewcab 4wd has pulled our 27.5 camper with ease. My truck weighs in at 6,300 lbs with the slide hitch, trailer dry weight is 7 ,700#
I had TLC airbags as an assist, they kept leaking after 1st year . I added the Timron larger suspension bumpers which were under $300
They work great for me, no squat and control any abrupt bumps.
We only occasionally weekend camp but have traveled a 1,000 miles to our home state. Only if you're considering numerous cross country trips would I suggest a larger truck, and then a diesel to aide refueling.
When empty I've had best of 22mpg, pulling around 11mpg. My brothers new Chevy 2500 6.2 2wd.had best of 16mpg empty. Pulling his 12k camper he gets around 8mpg.

I see way too many TT's being towed by 1/2 ton trucks that shouldn't be doing so. The manufacturers are in a marketing game to get the best towing capacity numbers, but that number isn't nearly as important as the truck's payload number. I have a 2021 212QB on order, and went out and got a new f-150 with the 3.3l and 6 speed, 8 foot bed, 2wd to tow it with because: longer wheelbase= smoother towing (most times), and the truck's payload capacity is 1,966 lbs. (it's a regular cab). The tongue weight of the 212Qb is going to be 450-500...wife and I 300...tool box and tools in bed about 120. That leaves more than 1,000 lbs. of payload left. Buddy of mine has new f150 super cab 4wd...payload capacity 1,496lbs. He has a TT with tongue weight of 500 or so...he, wife, and kids about 650...so he only has about 350 lbs. payload left. He was astonished when I showed him how he could easily be overloading his truck by just adding some normal things in the bed or in the TT. He was confident he was safe because he has a 12,000lb. towing capacity according to Ford (3.5l turbo), and his TT only weighs 5500. He is nowhere near his towing capacity but not very far from his payload capacity, so the payload capacity is a measure everyone should be paying close attention to.

The smallest and lightest Eagle HT has a 12999 GCWR, 15% pin weight is 1950lbs. Add a hitch and people you need a truck with a cargo cap of at least 2700lbs by time you add people and hitch with snacks or a dog. I don't think there is a 1/2 ton made to carry that!
