12 cu ft refridgerator icing up

Our refrigerator fins keep icing up after about 2 weeks of continuous operation. Is this normal.

The freezer compartment? Yes.


The fins in the back of the refrigerator section? No, you've got the temperature setting too cold.


If you get picky, the fridge should be set for 35F. That should allow the fins to warm up and the condensate drip off.

Yes this is normal depending on how often the doors are opened and the humidity in your trailer. Shut the refrigerator off for a little bit and let it drain and turn it back on. Now, when you say icing up, do you mean a heavy frost buildup or a solid block of ice?

We've experience this also. Though we're still getting use to our Jayco and this is the first trailer with a Norcold refrigerator, I'm finding that adjusting the refrigerator temperature via its front panel based on the ambient temperature has helped. When it's hot outside we turn the refrigerator temp up. When it's cooler outside we lower the refrigerator temp.
Not sure if the freezing is some how tied to the ambient temperature, but making adjustments to the refrigerator temperature has helped avoid the freezing condition.

We have struggled with getting the temp right, especially in hot climates. I picked up a small digital thermometer on Amazon. It was a big help in setting the temp. We also did the fan mod, purchased off ebay, to help try to get the temp more consistent in the fridge. Still trying to figure it out.

I full time and my Norcold has been set on #6 since new. It runs 24/7/365. The first one failed a bit over a year ago (it lasted almost 4 years before a coolant leak) and the replacement is still set on #6. I don't have a problem with cooling. Both units cooled fine in both the refrigerator section and the freezer section. Obviously the freezer doesn't make ice as fast as a residential refrigerator, but then a resi refrigerator doesn't run well on a 12v battery and propane.

I'm happy with my Norcold.

I rather stuff be too cold than too warm. If I have ice in my OJ I lower it one notch. lol

Iced fine are normal. There are fans available that help circulate the air and significantly reduce icing.

What type of fan do you use. Is this a fan for inside the refrigerator or a vent fan to help air flow around the coils and through the exterior vents?

RV frig's are not frost free. They operate on a totally different system than your home refrigerator. As said, depending on humidity and how often (and how long) doors are opened, will determine how often you need to "defrost" your frig. Also wiping sweaty items before placing in the frig or freezer will help keep frost down.
