28.5 RSTS Boondocking

While vacationing in Florida last week we stopped at a Jayco dealer to have another look at the unit we have been interested in. We pretty much boondock camp where ever we can for no other eason than to get away from the busy section of the camp grounds and noise. With our 6 volt battery set up and our little Champion we are good to go. Part of my afternoon chores involves refilling the water tank carrying a couple of 20 litre blue jugs from the camp ground water bib back to our site and using my little water transfer pump filling the camper back up. My wife questioned how I was going to do this with the 5th wheel as there did not appear to be a water gravity fill port. So unless I am missing something altogether please explain to me how to do this as this would certainly be a deal breaker for us.

You’ll use the onboard pump and pump the water from your water jugs to your tank. This will use some of your battery to do this.

ALong the same line as 'Bookemdanno' says you may also pick up a 12VDC pump from the Boat section at WALMART and use that to pump water from your water jugs to fill the on-board fresh water tank...

My on-board water pump has a water hose line valve that either selects water coming from the Fresh water tank or from a Winterizing fluid jug to pump to the trailer water system. Using my setup would have to be re-engineered to pull water from water jugs to put back into the fresh water tank... My setup also has one-way valves in the water that would prevent water coming from the city water port to go directly into the the fresh water tank. I'm surprised you do not have a manual fresh water tank fill port...

typical water flow for trailers...

Showing my one way valves...

Some of the newer trailer have a water fill panel allowing you to fill your fresh water tank with different positions of the knobs..

The new trailer may hold much more fresh water than your old trailer. My 2017 Eagle 293RKDS holds 75 gallons.
Newer Jaycos don't have a gravity fill. My Eagle has a valves that allow you to suck water in from containers as mentioned.

Roys diagrams above are good, but they do not apply to your setup.

We have the 2018 28.5 RSTS and we boondock (first boondocking trip is later this month). You fill the fresh water tank from your portable containers with the on board water pump. By flipping a few valves, the pump now sucks water out of your portable container and pumps it into your fresh water tank.

The manual calls this method of filling your fresh water tank "Country Fill". It's very simple to do. The one thing I think I need to do is put a longer hose on the pump. The one that comes with it looks like it would work fine for a 1 gallon jug, but I use 7.5 gallon jugs for my water refills.

Here's the text from the manual:
COUNTRY FILL: This setting allows you to fill the fresh water tank from a container of water in the absence of a pressurized water source.

Utility center valve position does not matter as it is not used for this operation.

* Black valve should be pointing to the clear suction hose.
* White valve should be pointing left toward the water tank.

This setting is identical to the SANITIZE TANK setting. Instead of placing the clear hose in a container of sanitizer, place it in a container of fresh water.

Turn water pump ON and water will be siphoned out of the container and into the fresh water tank. All drain valves must be closed to create a siphon.

Thank you. Could not imagine there was not a setting for gravity fill or to be able to fill the holding tank if not hooked up to a presurized water line. All well.

This is the case for the older (mine is a 2015) 28.5RSTS units.

Treatcg, we made up what we call a "water transfer pump" a few year back that we use on our present TT. I took a plastic battery box, mounted a RV water pump inside it wired to a 12 volt small tractor battery. I screw an intake and a discharge hose to the pump on site. Works fantastic. My initial concern hense the post was I did not see a gravity feed water intake on the unit we looked at last week. We have never had a full hookup site so we definetely need to manually fill our holding tank.

28.5 RSTS is an Eagle HT, different water controls than standard Eagle.

I am planning on boondocking also and have the same fifth. I have a Husky 175 watt cup power inverter and was wandering if you think it would run the living room television without harming it.

When you use the pump to fill, prime you hose first gets going faster. Also when you switch pump back to water for the camper. It seems to take a couple minutes to prime the pump! Thanks

Pure Sine Wave would be safer, a little pricey. Thanks
