377RLBH Tow vehicle

Hi everyone. My wife and I are looking very seriously at the 377RLBH fifth wheel. My current truck will need to be upgraded in order to tow it. I would prefer to stick with SRW so that it is more drivable (or more accurately park-able) when unhitched.

To those of you who already have a 377RLBH, what tow vehicle do you use?

I think the 2015-2016 Ram and Silverado 3500 SRW diesels both have the fifth wheel tow capacity, no problem (>17,000 lbs). However, I think payload may be the issue given the high pin weight of the 377RLBH.

Looks like the 2015 Silverado 3500 Crew Cab SRW diesel has payload of ~4300 lbs and the 2015 Ram 3500 SRW diesel ~4000-4300 lbs (Crew vs Mega cab).

377RLBH dry pin weight is 2915 lbs. So it depends what the actual pin weight is once fully loaded. If its close to 3000 lbs, that leaves enough for me and family in the truck. If its closer to 4000 lbs fully loaded, looks like I'll have to go DRW. Just curious what everyone's experience has been.

I'm guessing DRW is how this is going to have to go down....

I have a 2016 377RLBH. Fully loaded with generator. We full time so we carry everything we need. With all that my pin is a shade over 4,000 lbs with fill fresh water tank, full propane and gasoline tank on the generator. I currently tow with a 2013 GMC Sierra 2500 cc 4x4 regular bed. We are going to upgrade to a 2016 3500 SRW Sierra this spring, but more so due to having 60,000 miles on the one we have than the payload.

radjayco,

I have a 2014 GMC Sierra 3500HD Crew Cab SRW diesel with GVWR 11,500#
Here a some actual measured weights of our truck that may help.

Empty: 7,980# (payload = 3,520#)
This was with nothing in the bed (i.e., no fifth wheel hitch, no cargo) no passengers, only driver and full tank of fuel.

w/ Cargo: 8,440# (payload = 3,060#)
Bed was loaded with typical stuff I take camping and fifth wheel hitch (PullRite Supper Glide), Large bed tool box, etc., a full fuel tank, only Driver (no passengers),

I would expect my GMC weights would be very similar to the 2015 Silverado 3500 Crew Cab SRW diesel.

You should also take into consideration what the Gross Axle Weight Rating is of the rear axle of both vehicles.
On my 2014 GMC, the RGAWR is 7,050#
Empty: Rear Axle weight was 3,320# (3,730# under RGAWR)
w/ Cargo: Rear Axle weight was 3,760# (3,290# under RGAWR)

In my case the fifth wheel hitch and cargo in the bed load was = 440 - 460#

So you want to take into consideration cargo, fifth wheel hitch, etc. along with the trailer loaded pin weight when looking a weight loading on the truck.

Definitely a DRW will give you much better loading capacity, but as you've indicated, a DRW isn't the best vehicle for unloaded every day driving. That was why I went with a SRW. Our truck is also my every day driving vehicle.

Hope this was of some help.

I tow my 375BHFS which is similar in pin weight (3200#) as your potential rig. Yours is even a little more due to the mid bunk room ahead of the axles. My vote would be a dually and this is only based on my experience of towing with a dually. Personally I think it is more stable and the fear of a blowout on one rear tire is a main concern of control.

The axles are heavier and the payload is more. Once you factor in loading of the unit I would expect that pin weight to go up 700+ pounds and put you over the limits.

Can a SRW handle it, yes. Do people tow with them, yes. To each his own and I respect that. My opinion is I would rather have more truck than just enough or too little and in your case I think it is too little for payload only. Engine and tranny are not different options based on SRW or DRW trucks. What is different are the rears and maybe a spring pack, but I have not confirmed that.

On to some points based on my Ram:
Exhaust brake standard - Love this feature
5th wheel prep package - very nice feature and gives you several options in hitches.
Aisin 69 version - nice tranny and better than the previous 68 Aisin based on beefed up drive shaft and some clutch changes.
3.43 rear would struggle a little - and some have had to tow in 5th gear under heavy loads
Cargo cam option is very expensive to add after the fact, so if you are ordering, do so.
Integrated brake control is good vs my previous P3 experience.
Recall on front end for certain years and manufacture dates, so pull a car fax if buying used.

I tow our 377RLBH with a 2015 F350 SRW crew cab long bed diesel. I do have a set of air bags from Airlift. We mostly camp with in 2 hours of our house because of work and sports schedules. We go on one big trip during the summer that might be up to 600 to 800 miles one way. If I pulled it more miles I might consider going DRW.

We tow with a 2011 F350 SRW crew cab long bed diesel. We bought our truck 5 years ago and were towing a 31ft bumper pull. Most of our trips with the new Jayco will be within 200 miles but once a year we may take a longer trip. I think we will definitely consider a dually for our next truck, however, we are not experiencing any issues at all towing with our current truck. I think we would consider the dually simply for peace of mind in the event of a blow out and stability. Towing capacity seems fine as of right now.

Gotta agree with RobinA on the dually. We've almost always towed with duallies since the beginning for a few reasons. Stability of the rear platform, payload, and the security in the event of a rear tire blowing. They just tow so well. First tow rig back when was a 2500, and went to a dually after one trip with it. If you're only making short runs, then a single wheel may be fine, but if your like us and make long hauls frequently, then the dually is usually the better option in our opinion. My wife won't even look at a single wheel, as she tows too and knows the difference.

You're asking about apples and I've only got oranges, but...
Below is my weight spreadsheet for our 351RLTS and '13 F350 SRW 2WD SB.
Our 5th's GAW is 12780# and we have 3020# on the pin. The TV's Rear GAWR is 6730# and loaded we have 6240# on the rear axle. I don't know what the TV's advertised payload is but I expect it's in the 4000# range. Note that only about 200# of our load winds up on the front axle. The lion's share goes on the rear axle.
I am a huge fan of the CAT Scale.
I'm thinking it would be good to get some real-world weights on the TV you are thinking about to help with your decision.Click image for larger version

My 06 F350 came with 3.73 rear end. We are pulling the same 351rlts. Pin wt on mine is 2800 loaded. I am sure the DRW's come with 4.10.

I had an 06 with 3.73 and thought it pulled well. I was worried when I got my 2012 and the only option was 3.55, almost thought about not buying it.
It pulls better then the 06 and gets way better mileage towing and empty

I don't want to hear it! LOL I have several friends that poull similar rigs with the same SRW you mentioned and love it. Of course they came from a 7.3L diesel.

I hope this one lasts until I am issued a chariot.

I don't think your manual is for a 2013. You can't get 3.73 or higher in a 2011 or above SRW ... Only 3.55.
Your 6.7 has 3.55's in the rear
I got my info here https://www.ford.com/resources/ford/...superdtypu.pdf

I see where you're coming from now... You're reading the manual for a gasser.
The diesel is different

My 2013 has 3.73 gears. Wouldn't want any higher of a gear. 2007 (last rig) had 4.10, or whatever the low gear ford offered was. 3.73 does fine. We've towed 15k plus with it and no issues. This is a dually though. I'd honestly rather have the lowest gear they offer. Fuel mileage is negligible with the gear ratios, at least in our case.

Yes, a diesel changes the rear end specs. I had a 4.10 on my last dually. It did the job and not at much loss of economy.

When you are towing a behemoth, you put that a little down on the priority list.

How did you get the 3.73`s in a 2013.
I asked when I bought my 2012...no way.
Did they bring the option back in `13
And its not even listed in the Ford towing guide that I posted above..
Are we comparing comparing SRW and DRW?
