50 AMP Surge Protector

I just purchased a new Eagle 321RSTS. I am looking to purchase a new portable surge protector. What is the best portable surge protector?

IMO it is the best. I have had the other brand: https://www.amazon.com/Technology-Re...urge+protector that was hit by lightning and ruined and not repairable.

The PTC50C is repairable.

Both are pricey but worth it.

Go with an EMS unit rather than a surge protector, it provides better overall protection. I have the Progressive Industries EMS-PT50C. There are other good units too.

If you look at the pic it has a handy hasp on it. I lock the power ped box with it plugged in or use the metal loop to lock it to the pedestal.
I used it for years w/o locking it. Here is another thread on the subject

I use the Progressive as well. Great unit and I like the test function before it allows power to the camper. I don't lock it either and have never had a problem.

I've gone without surge protection forever but I've got a lot invested in this coach and am getting wiser with age. Most of the places we stay would likely be fine, but I've had 2 generators and some nice saws grow legs in the past.

I'll be picking one of these up off Amazon as that price is good insurance rather than to continue to push my luck. I'll grab the lock box too just for peace of mind.

We have the portable 50amp Progressive and when we get into the site we plug it into the pedestal and let it do it's thing while I unhook. Once the unhooking is done and the EMS has done it's checking then we plug the rig into it so we can proceed.

We have a lock down procedure but only use it in 'questionable' places.

For some reason that freshwater next to the blackwater dump bothers me....

Now that rinsing is on my mind. Are these units weatherproof...I live on the wetside of Washington state.

Yes very weatherproof. But if I am at a site where it isn't covered when hanging, or where it sits on the ground, I put it in a plastic grocery bag.

Waterproof!!

No need for a bag...unless you are in a flood!

If so I would have been long gone.

I NEVER plug in anywhere without my PT50C. I have seen lots of issues with power over the past 6 years full time and so far I have been protected or just lucky. Either way, I will NEVER plug in anywhere without my PT50C. I even have a spare brand new one still in the box to use if my primary ever has to go back for service and it does have a lifetime warranty. It also has a chain around it to the power pedestal and hasn't grown legs yet.

Now we would all probably agree that power at our home or home base is good, right? Not in a campground that is old and in some cases not maintained well. But at my home base site 2-3 years ago which is in a residential area my PT50C shut off my power at 3:00am. I woke up when a fan on the dresser quit. I didn't think too much about it since power does go off occasionally. When I got up I looked at the PT50C and it showed a "high voltage" issue had occurred. I thought it was a power outage, but the voltage was right on at that time. At 3:00am the next morning it happened again. I went outside right then and looked and high voltage again. The PT50C shuts you off above 132 volts and it was showing 134 right then, but no power to my 5'er. I turned off my main breaker and called the power company. They came out and found a dying transformer which they replaced. My neighbors told me later they had been experiencing burned out light bulbs.

Again, I NEVER EVER plug in without my PT50C.

I have the hardwired 50 amp and also the remote monitor. This unit works awesome, it is pricey thou.
What I really like if there is a problem it cuts the power OFF before it damages anything and delays for 2 minutes the power back on.
The monitor also tells you what the problem is..........Not a code you have to look at a paper to see what's wrong.

I took a lightning hit last year and my TRC unit was fried. I called them and they said it was not repairable but they would sell me a new one at a discount.

I now have a PT50C. It is repairable.
