5er with frame flex?

Does anyone out there, with a Jayco fifth wheel, have this frame flex "issue". The gap used to be quite small but now about 1/4" as you can see. Sorry bout the sideways picture (new tablet and operator error).

There has to be some flex or things would break. Just watch an airplane wing during flight, or stand on a bridge as cars drive across.

Not sure what yr you have, but pull the plastic moulding cap and check the screws underneath.

As said frames have to flex. If it is to stiff it may crack. Even if they flex they are not designed to go 80 miles/hour over rough roads.

My Eagle Premier had the same thing. There's at least 2 others on the forum that have had it also. When I took off the moulding cover and pulled the screws, I found that they were stripped from the wood. I believe the shake and vibration simply made the molding fall versus severe flex as I had no other issues. It also appears that Jayco over torqued the screws, stripping the wood. I put in longer screws and it held at least until I recently traded. I also found they over torqued the screws on the marker lights as I had one fall off and the screw was sheared right at the aluminum. While I had the marker light of I inspected the wall for water damage to explain the stripped screws and could not find any.

Yes on my ODS or road side from about 1ft after the bend to about 1ft from the nose. It's only 1/8-1/16th of an inch gap as indicated by the sealant. I inspected my frame from the king pin and around it where I could access as well as the front hatch. Found nothing out of norm.

I have not taken out the screw cover yet to see if I can get it back to the original position yet.

Mine is at the service center and that is one minor problem being fixed. The service guy told me the screws are to short and pull out of the wood. He said they would install longer screws that go into the metal that is further up.

For reference, on my Eagle Premier, the marker lights were on the center of the aluminum channel. That would give you an idea of how long the screw would need to be, assuming the side wall was but similar.

If I was doing the fix I would just remove the old screws fill and seal holes and use a little longer ones in new locations and seal those. Water gets under that vinyl insert and rots the wood. That is how my neighbor in last site fixed his. He used a thin coat of silicone to seal it all let dry and than put insert back in. Mine is on just one side. The real long screws into metal is the service center fix.

I contacted Jayco to ask them if this could be a problem. Their response is AS follows:

"Thank you for contacting Jayco customer service. In short, it could be. The unit is beyond the manufacturers warranty period and was not previously noted within the warranty period. My recommendation would be to contact your selling dealer or closest Jayco dealer and ask the dealer to work directly with Lippert components to test and inspect the unit."

I fixed mine yesterday. Screws were pulling out of the wood, so I put the next size up and 1/2 longer decking screws in. Then I ran Quad sealant down the trim to keep the water out.

Once I pulled out all the screws it went right back to the original position and the gap is gone.

Is Jayco not using the Norco/Bal NextGen Frames anymore?

I guess maybe I should have added some additional information about this issue. The 1/4" gap appears when loaded onto the tv. When the 5er is just sitting at the campsite or in storage (not connected to the truck) the gap disappears and goes back to the way it originally came from the factory. In other words, the gap appears before my very eyes when hitching up as I am raising the rv front landing legs.

Not mine. It was always the same hooked or not. Never grew even when the screws were pulled out.

My unit has 3/8 or half inch plywood with a fiberglass skin over it attached to the frame. If I were to take the trim off and the skin I could gain access to the frame.

I would poke around where you can a see around the hitch if there are any cracked welds anywhere.

Same issue on mine. I put in longer screws and all is good. There was one spot on the curb side where 6 screws weren’t even put in. Just empty holes.
