Angry 5th wheel Front cap fading

Have had 39 ft Jayco 2017 5th wheel for one year when we noticed frontcap fading. This was purchased new . Has anyone had luck with warranty covering sanding down, repainting and then clear coat. Two different dealers tried to get this done for us and all Jayco will allow is 10 hrs which doesn’t allow enough for painting. We feel this would just be a temp fix and not resolve the issue of their faulty product.

Thank you.

Sorry to hear that. Have you kept a good coating of wax or paint sealer on it since you've had it? My North Point is a year old and it still shines like the day I took delivery. However, I've applied paint sealant on the cap when it was four months old.

JAYCO buys caps from a 3rd party as do most RV manufacturers. There are numerous reports on JOF where JAYCO has paid for re-painting when the caps failed. Sounds like the dealers' you've contacted are milking the time based on the fact many have reported that JAYCO covered the work before.

My 2017 Eagle is in the shop now for front cap crack repairs and repaint and new decals under warranty. The cap started fading quickly.

My 2018 didn't make it three months before the fading started. It is at the dealership and I should get an answer from Jayco this week.

Our ‘13 faded pretty quickly and Jayco payed to have it repainted. 4 years and counting and it still looks great. I think there’s a bit of work involved (sanding the jell coat off before painting), so 10 hours may not be enough.
Grumpy is probably on to something with his “milking” comment. I’d suggest contacting Jayco directly and explain that your local dealers can’t/won’t perform the work and what should you do. Perhaps they will accept a non-Jayco estimate and cover the work.

I had the same problem. My dealer took pictures of it and sent them to Jayco and they approved repainting the entire front cap and decals. Looks like new again. Hope it lasts this time.

As explained to me by the Jayco Dealer service department that painted our cap, if you do not remove the GEL COAT down to the fiberglass, the oxidation will reappear in due time. I had the service department take pictures of the cap when it was sanded down to fiberglass so that I was positive that they followed the directions. Sanding it down to the fiberglass was the requirement that Jayco gave to the dealer. The dealership also guaranteed the pain job for 5 years, could not go wrong with that.

Not real happy right now! Jayco responded (through the dealership) that my cap fading was not a problem on a brand new trailer. Jayco has "offered $1500 good will" to repair it.

Picked my 2017 Eagle 293RKDS up last Friday. The dealer had the front cap cracks repaired and it completely repainted by a truck body shop they use. All covered under warranty. Also new cap decals. The cracks started within 6 months. By 12 months the painted started fading. Repairs made 18 months from delivery date. Cap looks great. Time will tell how it holds up.

Yeah, I don't get what good will money is supposed to mean on a 6 month old trailer. I will give the dealership one more crack at it, then I am calling Jayco myself to find out what gives.

My guess is that is what Jayco is offering the dealer to repair it and the dealer doesn't want to deal with it?? Who is cutting the check, dealer or Jayco?

Thus far all I got was a late afternoon phone message. She asked to wait until tomorrow so she could try one more time. I assume from the message, it is Jayco.

I would think the warranty repair would be accepted by Jayco without the odd "good faith" wording. Like they are doing me a favor . . .

I went by the dealership and it is parked next to another 2018. Mine is on the left. The one on the right is fine.

The service writer said Jayco only authorized "non-warranty" repair of 10 hours / $1500.00 to repair it. The dealership says this averages $2000.00 for repair.

I cannot understand how this happens within 120 days of purchase and they are not covering it under warranty. I sent Jayco that question, along with exactly what needs to be done to make it like new (as it should be).

Ask the service writer for a copy of that correspondence from JAYCO.

I agree, maybe the dealer is up to something shady. My front cap had cracks repaired and the whole cap repainted for fading paint. All done through the dealer. No checks, no limit. Dealer sent it out to a truck body shop. Dealer installed the new decals.

We bought this in another state. The local dealer is doing all the warranty work. They don't do body work. They farm that out. I have not been told of any payments from me, yet. Just the dollar figures approved and what it typically is done for.

She read me the words. I didn't actually see the paper. But, I cannot imagine they would do anything weird. or she probably would not have given me the auth code for the work from Jayco.

I emailed Jayco Customer Service pictures of my 11 month old 2018 293RKDS fading cap and something else that needs to be fixed.. Here is the email I got back about up to $1500.00 for "restoring" the faded cap. In 11 months I have hand waxed the camper twice with Meguiar's #56. I did not like his comment about "Maintenace issue" but I did not reply back. Might be, but not on my part. The camper is also stored under RV carport. I have an appointment with my selling dealer at the end of the month. I removed the customer service specialist name from the below email response I received.

You will want to reach out to your selling dealer to have the issue inspected and submitted for review. Front cap fade is a maintenance issue not covered by warranty, however Jayco does typically offer assistance of restoring through authorized Jayco dealers not to exceed $1500. Both issues will need to be submitted through the dealer for review.

Thank you,

Jayco sent me a deceitful email stating they "did not deny warranty coverage for this correction to be provided to the unit". However, the actual correspondence to the dealer states "this non-warrantable complaint". They couldn't have denied it any more than that.

So much for the famous 2 year no strings warranty they advertise and/or standing behind your product . . . .
