5th wheel tripod stand

Should I get a tripod stand for my 5th wheel to help stabilize it, or is it even needed?

I’ve never used one so don’t know how much of a difference, if any, it would make, but we’re now in our fourth year with a 5er and haven’t had any stability issues

If you're looking to reduce movement of the trailer, IIRC the consensus seems to be that the 'strong-arm type' do a better job of controlling movement.

I couldn’t use the ones under the frame because of where my spare was and I didn’t want to bother moving it. We started with just X Chocks to start with and that does most of the work. We still had movement up in the bedroom, it didn’t bother me but my wife was still complaining. So I bought a pin box stabilizer and it got rid of almost all movement. Just read the reviews and don't buy a cheap one, you want it stout. I use the ultra fab, about $100, works great.

I actually tried one last month and it made absolutely no difference in the movement of our 377. We have the 6 point level system

I should have also mentioned my trailer is a fairly lite one with only 4 jacks. The bigger 5er’s with 6 jacks that are heavier probably don’t have the movement i get. You didn’t say what your trailer you have, so keep that in mind.

I have a heavy duty one and it seem like it's a little better but I guess it all depend on the person, you want get all of the movement out but it can be so that you can live with it, a little.

It will seem like that some say yes and some say no but I guess if I try it without I might be able to tell. It seem like that the strong-arm is the way to go first.

I have JT strong arm stabilizing bars on my 321RSTS. It takes out 80% of the movement. I still get allot of movement in the back of the FW. I purchased “the rock rv stabilizer” and put it in rear of my FW. WOW! Zero movement. I would highly recommend this product. If I had to do it over again, I would have not purchased the JT strong arms and put the rock on the front and back. Watch the U tube videos on “the rock rv stabilizers”. Great product and they are custom made for your unit. Cost is about the same as the JT.

I was about to give away my X-chocks that I used on my travel trailer that we traded in on the 5'er. But then I read on one of the threads that they work on 5'ers so next trip out, I used them. We have six point leveling and there's not a whole lot of movement anyway but you can tell when someone walks from one end to the other. So we tried the x-chocks. They actually helped quite a bit. I'm glad I tried them on the 5'er. I took them off the night before we left just in preparation for the departure the next day. More movement was back on the 5'er so yea, they make a difference.

So, you never said if you have a washer and dryer? We had JB Strongarms until we upgraded with a washer/dryer on our new unit. It Helped a lot while doing laundry.

I did have to removed the Tripods center brace and install chains to the legs. My rig is/needs to be low in the front to prevent the wheels from lifting on some lots. (Auto leveling), sometimes put a positive frame camber to our rig and it gives our appliance slide an issue.

Review this post for a DIY solution that is inexpensive and very effective.

I use the tripod in My Eagle HT 26.5 BHS. It removes about 70-80% of the movement. This is good enough for the family.

I made some home-made ones to test, 2x2’s with a I-bolt at the bottom and a ratchet strap between them. Amazing difference. There are a couple other options similar to the JT Strong arms that are much less money, but lots of good reviews on the strong-arms.

Typo: it's www.therockrvstabilizer.com.

To me, it looks decent and operates in one dimension - so side-side. But it also sticks out and would be a tripping hazard?

I use the system from SteadyFast.com and it includes 3 points, 2 side-side (front & rear) and one front to back (installed at front). I think it's similar to JT strong arm but it's beefier so doesn't need as many attachment points. I would go with either SteadyFast or JT, so many folks out there that are happy with either of those.

Open Range 3X includes JT from the factory. I would probably have gotten it too but it was clear that the generator exhaust on my North Point would have been in the way of the JT so I went with SteadyFast. Very happy with it.

I put StadyFast Stabilizers on my fiver and am pretty happy with results. It takes out 90 to 95% of the wiggle.
The Rock Rv Stabilizer is a metal version of DIY 2X4's, eye bolts and come-alongs which I made for my old TT. They worked very well also. Check out Forums Search site for stabilizers or go to Pinterst for pictures.

Happy RVing,
Jeff
