AC in our Pinnacle

We have been in several 85 + degree days on our way home from California. We only have the one AC unit in the living room and it has a difficult time cooling the area. It maybe drops the temp about 6 degrees but that's about it. Also the discharged air is cool not cold. Does anybody else have this issue?

We have been in Texas for the last couple of weeks with temps in the mid to upper 80s.

We do have two A/C units in our Pinnacle and they have no problem keeping the inside cool and comfortable.

We knew up front that we would be spending a lot of time in the South in the summer so a must for us was to make sure we had the 2nd A/C.

I have two a/c's as well and last summer in Panama City I had no problem keeping things cool inside. One a/c would have had a problem however. I do have dual pane windows also.

We have the same 5er with only one AC. It worked fine when it was only 80 degrees out. We are traveling mostly northeast this summer so it may not get put to the test. I guess we will be taking some portable fans along just in case.

It's probably a 15K A/C so it should work a little better than that I would think? With the unit in the very rear, I would bet that by the time the air gets to the front it's weak and much warmer as well.

Last year I had a similar issue where we were camping in 85 degree weather but very humid. The one A/C, while it worked, was far from working as well as we would have liked. This year I have already had a second A/C installed in the bedroom. We haven't been out yet so I can't tell if it's better or not but I suspect that it will be.

Maybe you should have the A/C checked, but if you camp in higher heat areas, a second a/c might be in order?

Two AC's are a requirement for our next 5th wheel.

It gets too hot in Texas in the summer for a single AC. Our current 30' travel trailer witha single 15K AC struggles to keep up when it's over 95.

You can probably fix the shed opening.

The front a/c is a low profile.

Our Bedroom A/C still Freezes up no matter what we do.

We have to leave the "Chill Grill" registers open to prevent it from freezing up.

Do not know why Jayco only put a duct on one side of the bedroom A/C unit.

Rob, have you reported the problem and possible design improvement to Jayco and your dealer?

Hopefully they will listen and improve the design for future models.

What could/should they do to prevent it from happening? Is there a modification you can make?

When my single 15K AC freezes up, it has always been a clogged return air filter. But I'm sure you've already checked that.

Yep, been checking the filter regularly and keeping it clean.

Just sent it to Jayco this evening on the contact tab on their website, will see if I get a response and or suggestions on how to modify or correct.

The BR ac on my new rig is not a low profile unit. It is a 13.5 k cool only version. The lo profile must be ordered specifically.

BTW, I had to raise my storage shed a little over a ft but the ac was not the reason. The new rig was a ft taller. The front AC is the high point.

Normaly "low airflow" is the culprit allowing the evap coil to freeze.Dirty filter, closed vents 1st suspects. Coil should be around 45-50 Degrees when working properly and temps getting warm outside.Might just be undercharged which needs repair.
A simple cure if all else fails is get an AC tech to add a "freeze thermostat" to the evap coil that turns off compressor when coil approachs freezing,I use a stat set at 35Degrees F.

How high is your rig? Mine is 13' 4" when hooked up to the truck (ouch). Really have to watch where your going. A low profile AC would be a nice addition. 2 or 3 inches would make quite a difference.

Jayco' response is below;

Dear Mr. Eaton,

The air conditioner should only be run on high speed for the initial cool down with the chill grill open. After 10-15 minutes the AC fan should be switched to low speed. Understand that the AC will only cool about 15 degrees below outside ambient temperature. This is also affected by humidity. By running the AC on high all the time it does not allow the moisture to evaporate and drain from the cooling unit causing a freeze up. I also recommend the use of a dehumidifier in high humidity regions such as Florida.

Sincerely,

Roger Johnson
