Added electrical outlet above sink.

My wife complained that there was not an AC outlet anywhere above the sink area of our 2017 27.5 RKDS. So, I began to take a look around and find a place to pick up power and add a convenience outlet. The cabinet to the left of the microwave is where the microwave plugs in. So, I figured I could get power from that outlet.

After removing the microwave, the back of the outlet is to the left with 12/2 with ground feeding it. There was sufficient slack in the 12/2 to cut the wire and mount a junction box. There is also a 12v wire back there that feeds the existing 12v light under the kitchen cabinets above the sink. You will have to cut a hole the size of your outlet box in the bottom of the cabinet above the counter. Your 14/2 wire will pass through the same hole that the 12v wire goes through. Careful cutting the hole since the 12v wire is in the space you are making access for your outlet box.

So, what you will need to do this project is:

2-ea shallow single gang boxes. One of these will be used as the junction box behind the microwave. It is important that these be shallow boxes. There is only about a 2" space between the cabinet bottom fascia and actual bottom of the cabinet. It's an open space for the 12v wire to run to the light. The outlet boxes I got from Lowes measured 3 - 1/2L x 2 -3/16W x 1 -3/4D and had tabs on the box that allowed them to flush mount.

About 3 feet of 14/2 with ground.

3-ea wire nuts.

1-ea 120v outlet. I picked up a cheap one that is 15 amp rated.

A few screws to mount the junction box to the wall and to mount the outlet box under the cabinet.

1-ea blank wall plate for the junction box.

1-ea duplex wall plate for the outlet.

Took me about 2 hours to do the work which included a trip to Ace Hardware and a pause for a cold one

I tied an under cabinet light to mine a few years ago.

Just be careful as the mw draws about 11 amps when running so if you are making coffee or toast with it, expect the breaker to trip.

Was the MW on a ground fault circuit? Being around a sink you want it to be on one for safety.

No, the MW is not on a GFI and, unfortunately there is not enough room in the low profile outlet box to have included a GFI duplex outlet.

Wet area so needs to be GFCI protected
Plus I was trained to run a microwave/fridge/freezer on its own circuit with nothing else on those circuits. I wouldn't have used, would have have ran somewhere else. But that's me.

Although I agree with your statement, I guess I live on the "edge". My home was built in 1974, it has 3 outlets, without GFI protection, above the counter top that houses the sink ... the microwave is plugged into the same outlet as the refrigerator ... there is 2 full bathrooms in the home that each have 1 outlet near the sink(s) without GFI protection. I'm not worried about an electrical mishap.

Even my POPUP Trailer suffered without a close-by 120VAC Receptacle around the kitchen area. I mounted one near the sink to the front of the fold-over cabinet assy.. I thought my fold-over sink/stove top was going to be an issue with adding a 120VAC drop over in it but it worked out just fine... I used metal flex conduit into an Electrical Receptacle Box on both ends so the 120Vac Cable would flex and bend when moving the fold-over sink/stove top assy.... I strapped the flex cable with several other hoses and cables that fed the fold-over cabinet top so it is a shallow bend.

I also mounted a ceiling light directly above the sink/stove top area in the popup roof section and tied into the 12VDC wiring from the other ceiling mounted 12V light assy's...

Sorry no picture here as well haha...

This is not a brick and mortor home...National building and electrical codes do not apply. Yes in a perfect world it would be on a ground fault separate circuit. As long as the outlet is not used at the same time as the MW no issue...and yes you need to be careful as to the outlet and water.. just as we did all my childhood and much of my adulthood. Happy Camping !

Not saying it was installed correctly or not, but if you ever get a chance throw a hot gfci outlet in a bucket of water, you might be surprised with the results.

True, different codes apply but those would still require a GFCI in a wet location. Merely being careful is simply not enough. Everyone makes mistakes.
