Auxiliary diesel tank

Not sure if this is the correct place to post this question but...

Has anyone considered installing an auxiliary diesel "in bed" tank in their tow vehicle? I have a 2016 Ram 8 ft bed with a Andersen Ultimate hitch. I am considering a Titan 40 or 50 gallon in bed tank. My stock tank is only 32 gallons so my range is about 300 to 350 miles. I would like to extend my range to a days travel, so at minimum, about 500 miles.

I am going with the Titan 55 replacement tank. By the time I invest in the aux tank, the feed valve, delivery and loss of bed space I would rather go this route. Not to mention having to climb up in the truck and fuel up.

Yes it's $400 dollars more, but it will be like my truck is now only with 300 more miles until empty. Putting me up to 500 mile range with reserves.

My bed is utilized every trip and I am not willing to give that up.

Loaded I am getting 10.5-11MPG. Unloaded I can get 17.

Searching for fuel stops every 250 miles out is not my favorite thing.

RDS was my choice for in bed when I was comparing options.

Also 32 is misleading as I have had it down to 8 miles to go and could only fit 29.5 in it.

I have a 45 gallon RDS tank. It is gravity fed into the main tank. I have a solenoid hooked up to one of my upfitter switches. Works great

I didn’t even think about adding a solenoid and wiring to my switches. I was a dumby and was just going to leave the manual turn lever.

You know my wife doesn’t like you, right Tom? You keep having me spend more money!

Have only had our ‘99 F250 7.3L PSD for a couple of months but the previous (and original) owner installed a Transfer Flow auxiliary tank in the bed. LCD gauge in cab shows the percentage of fuel in both the main and auxiliary fuel tanks, and lets you know when the fuel is being transferred from the auxiliary tank to the main fuel tank. Holds 50 gals, I believe. PO hauled an Airstream all over the country; worked great. I have a Stockland bed shell with side flip-up windows, so filling tank is easy. So far, I’m impressed.

I have a 100 gallon from Transfer Flow on my 2000 F350 7.3 diesel. 265,00 miles on it with no problems. I replaced the original tank on my Tundra with a 46 gallon tank also from Transfer Flow.

After much research and overthinking, I think I will go with 3'senough. Titan 55 gallon replacement tank. I too, value my bed space. Plus I have a tool box that I want to keep.

We have an American Tank 65gal aux diesel fuel tank in the box of our TV.

Why??? Didn't want to go wirh a gravity fed tank...didn't make sense to me.

Have a switch under the dash for upper or lower (main tank). Selecting either keeps the fuel burning and re-sets the fuel gauge....all on the move!!

In other words no stopping, no sweat and no problems.

With about a 100 gals. of fuel on board when full we can go a long ways picking our best $$$ fuel stops.

I bought a Titan Travel Trekker 50 for my brand new '16 F350 this past summer. Truck had less than a 1000 miles on it. The factory 26 gal tank was just not going to be enough. My solution to taking up bed space was to make the tank removable. I made a frame that the tank bolts to, and then that frame picks up on the front rail of the 5th wheel hitch and the forward most bed mounting bolts. I then used fuel QDs found on aircraft for the lines and the wiring i have a waterproof connector. I'll admit i don't know how easy it will be able to remove because there will always be some amount a fuel in it, but the ability to travel over 600-700 miles without stopping for fuel is great. My only complaint with the fuel tank is that the fuel opening on the tank doesn't accommodate the large nozzles at the truck stops.

I have given this some thought and came to the conclusion, I have to pee too often to go 500 miles non-stop. With that said, my 26 gallon tank is just right. Drive two hours, stop, pee, stretch my legs, fuel-up and get ready for the next stop in two hours. Also, many times, Kitty and Anna-Sue can't wait the two hours!!!!

For me it’s not so much about not stopping frequently, but more about not being caught some place where I can easily fill up.

A "P.S." to my last post:
On two trips I did carry a 5 gallon can of diesel for that "just in case" situation.

+1! I just put mine in so that I can stop when I want to stop, not because i have too. The bathroom is always being towed behind me when needed.

Exactly the reason i put it in, so i can be in control of when i fill up, and can pick areas with lower fuel costs and convenient stations.

I too wanted more fuel capacity. We sold our truck camper and have a North Point on order. Going back to towing I wanted to have a longer towing range. I was really concerned about the simplicity of a gravity fed tank but didn't want to pay the high price for the alternative. For my 2015 F350 DRW the gravity fed tank is no issue. I can leave the valve on and draw down the auxiliary tank without any leaks in the fuel system or open the valve after my main tank is low. I was really surprised there were no leaks. (If open and main tank is full, don't open the main tank cap!)

My set up is an ATI Aux46 diesel tank and a weather guard tool chest. I have room for a roll up cover to hide everything. Also have a 18K B&W Patriot Hitch with plenty of room to operate.

I ordered the ATI tank from Tank & Barrel online and picked up the tank in person at ATI's facility in Winter Haven Fl which is close by. I have a total capacity of 83 gallons now which keeps away from the pumps for up to two weeks with my normal running around. Should be able to travel with the fifth wheel and fill up once a day without alot of hassle. Looking forward to the first trip.
