Battery boxes?

So, I went to the storage facility and got them to give me access to my HT 26.5RLS. I determined that the battery compartment has capacity of (LxWxD) 22 x 10.5 x 17.5. Costco 6v batteries are 10 x 7 x 12. Yea! So I bought two.

Now the issue is finding a box to house them that will fit in the space. Most boxes seem to be oversized, and then add on handles, etc. and they are too big (either 2 singles or one double).

Anyone else overcome the challenge? I want to make sure they are properly vented, and protect the area from whatever stray acid might slosh around.

Any suggestions?

Isn't your battery compartment already vented? Is there a plastic tray in your battery compartment?

If you get a chance, check over in the JOF "Tech Talk" and "Jayco Mods" forums...., there might be something there.

There is a battery box available just for two each GC2 6VDC GOLF CART batteries. I don't remember the manufacture name but a quick search on GOOGLE should get you going in the right direction...

Currently there is a sealed box for a group 27 12volt, that has a duct to an outside vent. The 12v is dead, so I want to upgrade for more capacity. Which means diffferent boxes, and redoing the duct work.

I've seen a couple. Noco seems to the the common one, they sell double boxes for batteries going either the long or the short way. But both are a bit oversized for the batteries and too big to fit the space Jayco has provided. I may have to custom build something.

A friend of mine who manages a battery store mention that one might consider 2 - 12v batteries instead of 2 - 6v. (He likes the idea of 2 - 6v) but if one 6v fails you are out of luck having anything work from the batteries.
Just a thought.

I went with 6V batteries in pairs, but with AGM so venting is not required. Measure your space and see if AGM are for you. They are pricey but require no maintenance.

As far as one battery failing and making the system useless, I wouldn't worry about that. The same could be said for 12v batteries, if one has failed the other will bled down to equalize.

After I kill the Costco ones I got, I'll move to AGM. Have AGM's in the boat for a trolling motor and they are the best. But $$$ are a factor, so I'll see how much I really use this setup before going big.
The HT 26.5 RLS is pretty limited overall in space, so unless I move everything to the main basement, there's not room for 4 6 volt. And if one 6v goes out, there's always KOA.... Did look hard at 2 12 volt, but combined space, amps, and cost tipped it to 6v.
All in all, this is a initial foray into boondocking a little bit. Who knows, I may dump everything and upgrade to much bigger truck and fifth before I need to consider more amps on board!

When I went from 2 up to 4 batteries, I built my own box, and stubbed vent hose in the top of the box so the existing vent hose could slide down over top... Allowing for easy box lid removal

I did a post when I built it

My TT only has room for two batteries up front and for me two 6-v worked fine but have to watch extended battery usage, like needing the furnace all night.

With my new FW trailer I new I wanted to maximize my battery capacity. I went with four 6 volt AGM batteries these are heavy at 90 lbs each and the space is tight. I wouldn't be able to add water so AGM was the best option. These give me 600Ah. I only boondock so I use batteries a lot. I will be adding Solar and a inverter/charger.

Those are my reasons, no hurry. Batteries don't last forever.

Thanks Imnaha - that's the dream, to do as you are planning. But baby steps first, and as you say, batteries don't last forever...
And thanks to JMooney! I like that idea very much. Off to WalMart, Target, etc. to see what might be out there to accommodate!

I have two 6 volt batteries on my rig. I used two Noco group 24 boxes with the "inside" handles cut off. With a hand saw it's really easy to slice them off flush. The lids will not snap down, but using the plastic straps, everything is held down pretty snug.

Good Luck!
