OK, more rookie questions. How much clearance should there be between the top of the truck bed and the camper itself? I towed the camper home with the 5th wheel set where the dealer installed it. Much too high, pretty much all weight was on rear axle of the trailer.
This morning I lowered the 5th wheel to the lowest setting. I now have 8 1/4 inches between top of tailgate/rearmost part of bed and the camper. Is this sufficient? Too much? Not enough? I realize that there needs to be some play for side to side motion when traversing a slope one way or the other. What's a general consensus or rule of thumb? I can move the pin box up a hole or two if I need to go lower still.
In the photo shown, there is no weight on the landing gear, they're about a half inch from touching ground. I've had a Class A CDL for over 30 years, but no recent experience with tractor trailers, only straight trucks. So once again I'm looking for a little guidance from folks more experienced in the camper towing world.
The idea is to ride with the trailer as close to level as possible. If it's level at 8 1/4" you are fine. If it's nose-high, you can bring it down a few inches. 6" clearance seems to be about standard, though I've seen folks run with less...

6" is the suggested clearance from what I've always read but "level" is more important. I've run with less than 6 in the past and just watch very carefully when navigating uneven surfaces. Like backing into my driveway...
My current rig rides a little nose high and I have one hole of adjustment left on my hitch so I'll most likely drop it the remaining inch. That'll leave me with right around 5-6 inches clearance.
I'd rather be level with just short of the suggested 6 than nose high.

It's not bad right now as far as level. The 5th wheel is at the bottom for adjustment. I can raise the pin box a little more. Will most like just go up one more hole there and I think it'll be very good.
