Best 5th wheel hitch

*5th wheel newbies* We have a 2015 F250 lariat power stroke diesel shortbed and we really like the 2018 Jayco Eagle 30.5 mbok. Most important question is what 5th wheel hitch setup would be the best? Also, is anyone having any isssues or concerns we should watch out for? Thank you!

I have a short bed Ram and went with the Demco Auto Slide. She works great, no need to get out, pull slide lever etc..when getting ready to back into tight quarters. Picked up through E-Trailer at $1k free deliver in three days. My Ram as the puck system making the Demco an easy install. If you think it's worth $300 over a non-autoslide hitch would go the Demco route.

Had a Curt slider. A16 I think. It was good but a little bit of slop both in the jaws and the slider mechanism. Sold it and purchased a B&W Patriot non sliding hitch. I really like this one. Super easy hitching/unhitching and zero slop, which equals a quiet ride with no chucking or clunking.

I have a 2016 F250 powerstroke with a husky 16k hitch. I had a 2013 rlts and had no problems turning with a short bed. I now have a 2018 mbok that I ordered with a orbital hitch. And have had no problems turning.

I have a 2016 F250 screw short bed diesel and 2017 Eagle 321rsts. Using a pullrite superlite superglide auto slider. Using a reese isr to Ford puck adapter under the hitch. No issues with cab clearance, no slop. My hitch sits in box high enough to see the saddle in rear window with this setup. Makes hookups easy. With my trailer I would not think of using anything but an auto slider. Too much bubble over king pin. Only downside of the superglide is it is heavy. Combined with the adapter it is more than a two man lift. I rigged an electric winch in my garage to get it out set it on a roller cart. Bought hitch used. Adapter was new.

Just my 2 and 1/2 cent experience.

X2 for pullrite Superglide. Little expensive but best slider on the market. I can pull a U turn with confidence that I wont do thousands in damage to my truck. Keep in mind with a short bed that on flat surface you probably fine with a fixed hitch. But when you are on rough or slanted surfaces it can effect how it close it is to your cab. The auto slide hitch is good insurance as a new cab to fix damage to your truck is ALOT more expensive. I have had my Pullrite for 5 years and it has been flawless.

Also it's a great company. Customer service is amazing. I will be honest I got my hitch as a demo unit (but not even a scratch on it) when they discontinued the model. I was in a tough place but we camp due to my sons disabilities he doesnt do well in hotels and weird places. I got on the phone with company to get a part number for brackets as I was looking at a used one on Craig lists. The guy on the phone was sales manager. He asked why I wont get a new one and I explain our situation between medical costs and bad economy of myself being a construction manager. He said he had to call me back with number. He called back and he decided to talk to the owner and they wanted to give me a whole setup including the extra parts to match my truck for JUST the cost of shipping. They wanted to help a family out and since they could tell I had no intention of looking for a handout. I'm a man but it brought tears my eyes. So again best product but also the best company behind it.

I have a 2017 Chevy 2500 diesel pulling a 291rsts using a B&M companion. Works well, easy install, easy to get out.
My Son has a 2500 RAM with the B&M slider. It was a costly install because it’s a 2017 RAM. The hitch works great but it’s too heavy for him to get out of the truck himself.

How long is your bed? I have a 2013 Chevy 2500HD diesel with 6-1/2 ft. bed, would I need a slider hitch as I've been reading above? Haven't bought the 5th wheel yet but currently looking for a toy hauler (my first 5ver.)

Many more modern 5th wheels have better-designed noses where short beds (Like yours) can tow them with a cheaper fixed hitch. BUT that is under normal conditions and has a lot of factors to it. Once the camper is on a weird slant or bumpy road or a tight U turn... the front of the 5th wheel COULD hit your truck's cab causing heavy damage to both. So people that have short beds and fixed hitches have to be extra careful when turning or backing up. I will tell you with all the tight places I been... I am glad I DO NOT have to worry about it and just worry about getting where I am going or parking. No extra stress or "O its getting too close..." I highly suggest a AUTO slider also. Differences:

Manual slider: Cheaper but you have to get out of your truck to pull an handle to get it to slide. While handle is in town position, its just like a fixed hitch. Then once you are done with sliding, you have to get back out and relock it in place.

Auto Slider (What I recommend highly and worth its price) will automatically slide the camper connection point back everytime the camper turns whether going forward or reserve.

I have the 6.5’ bed, have not had any issues. The combination of the hitch, pin box and front cap design of the Eagle gives me 88 degree turning. It’s not full 90 degree, but with the exception of my home parking spot, I never get over about 60 degrees.
I think the Rams have a 6.25’ bed, so then a slider might be more convenient to use. I don’t see a need for the Chevy 2500 short bed. I think The Chevy 1500 has a 6’ short bed, that’s where a slider really comes in handy.

Have a Blue Ox Superglide pulling our 321RSTS. Really takes out all the shuck and jounce. Pulled briefly with a short bed and trailer came way too close to cab on a couple of tight turns. Hitch is a manual slider too but afraid I'd forget when trying to get into say a tight gas station entrance. Now have long bed-love the hitch.

I have a Pullrite #2700 16K auto slider which I love. We have a 2017 Dodge Ram 2500 with the 5th wheel prep system. I can remove my hitch and rail system which leaves me with a clean bed. I don't have rails that are permanently mounted to the pickup bed. You'll get all kinds of self comments on there hitch just like i did. I suggest watching this utube video and go from there.

We have a curt a25 fixed hitch. We got the long bed truck so as not to worry about sliders. Now I am just adjusting to a truck that has the turning radius of a Boeing 747 but that’s ok. I like the added storage with space for a toolbox.

As far as the hitch, the Pinnacle seems to follow us wherever we go, so we are happy with it.

Check into the B&W turnover ball hitch. We have a 2016 Ford F-250 short bed and pull a 2019 317RLOK. Install costs $1,800.
When not in use you have use of entire truck bed
Can pull gooseneck trailer or 5th wheel
Hitch/Frame that goes in bed of truck is 2 separate pieces which makes it manageable for 1 person to pick up.
Only had to cut one hole in bed of truck for ball
Costs about $700 more than other hitches but worth it to us

I have the same Curt A16 hitch. I had some slop in the base, slide, I purchased the rubber spacers that went in between the hitch and the rails. It helped quite a bit. The Curt came with the 5er when I purchased it from CW. (they threw it in N/C). I probably would not have got a Curt if I had to pay for it.

Andersen Ultimate here in a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 short bed towing a 2018 Eagle HT 29.5 FBDS. I haven't towed much with a standard fifth wheel hitch to compare to, but I really like this hitch. Easy to hook up alone (I can see it out the back window and use the remote controlled landing gear) and easy to remove so I can use the full bed.
