Best mod ever for <$300

Without a doubt. On The Go portable water softener. We got tired of going thru a bottle of shampoo every 3-4 showers.

How does it get regenerated? how much salt do you need to carry with you?

Regenerates by adding salt to recharge the media inside. Uses 2 boxes of regular salt. Depending on your usage, probably only twice a year if you only camp occasionally. If you full time, it's probably every other week. They give you test strips to check the water hardness so you can know when it's time to regenerate

How easy / difficult is that unit to winterize?

Just getting it I can't say, but it doesn't seem like it would be too difficult. Just empty it out and dry it out and you would have zero moisture to have to worry about and then when you need to use it again, add new resin ($64) and salt and you're ready to go!
