Post Black water tank won't empty

1998 Eagle 263 - The handle to the black water tank pulls out, but the tank does not empty - in fact, nothing comes out and it is full. Now what do I do?

It's gonna be ugly. Sounds like the gate needs to be replaced. In order to do that you have to take the old one out and that could get messy. Maybe someone on here has had to deal with this and has an idea but I do not see a clean way.

You say the handle pulls out but the tank doesn't empty.
Sounds like the rod that runs between the pull handle and the gate has come unscrewed from the gate.
If that is the case the fix is as easy as screwing it back in again.

Place the cap securely on the dump port. The best thing to do is get under the unit, up close and personal with the gate valve. Have someone operate the pull handle. Observe what is happening. There is a rod that enters the gate valve that slides it open when pulled. It should become apparent at that point why it is not working.

If you discover the problem and fix it WAIT until you are at a dump station before actually opening the valve.

Some more considerations....When was the last time you KNOW the tank was empty? Is this a used unit that you just bought? Maybe a LONG time has passed and the crud has dried blocking the the tank drain? With more details we may come up with more ideas. Is it just reading full on the idiot lights or do you KNOW it is full?

You can also run a plumbers snake through the outlet with the valve open and see if you hit the gate or if it s just plugged.

Just a note. If its plugged and the snake gets through than stand back.

Careful....a plumbers snake can easily damage the seal in the gate valve. I would NOT recommend that method.

It is a recently purchased used fifth wheel, but it emptied the last time. It is full by looking through the toilet. I tried screwing the rod back on but had no luck.

Was the "no luck" for screwing the rod back on or valve would not open after successfully screwing the rod back on?

Can you see the rod that goes into the actual valve move? Not the one with the handle you pull.
You say absolutely NOTHING flows when the valve is opened? Not even a trickle? 100% dry?

If that valve rod DOES move you have obviously got a MAJOR blockage. The snake idea MIGHT work. But you will likely damage the valve seat. But, at this point you may have no choice. When it unblocks - LOOK OUT! It's gonna be messy BIG TIME. Unless you can do this at a dump station.

If you do damage the seat it's not a big job nor expensive to replace the valve. Much easier to do with the tank empty. (As if I needed to say that:hihi

I had no luck screwing the rod back on. It turns easily enough, but it does not catch any threads. I can only see the pull rod. I can not see the valve rod. I am assuming the valve is not opening.

What is preventing you from seeing the valve rod?

Can you take some photos of the valve and rod in the open and closed positions?

I had the same issue with my Designer, I tracked down the wire that comes from the pull handle, I was able to cut out a small portion of the insulation board in the storage compartment just under where he wire from the pull handle hooks in. I found that the wire cable has stretched and was not opening the small round cylinder which in returns opens the valve. I have left the cable unhooked and simply reach under and pull it open by hand now. I found that the tank opens completely and flushes out well. Thought I might run this by you since I had the same problem. Hope everything comes out ok

Came across this thread, having same issue with my black tank pull. Not sure where to start cutting... where is the valve for the black tank?
