Brake Adjustment

I have decided to repack bearings and replace brakes this year. I have noticed a loss in braking power. I purchased AP brakes which is all that is being sold in my area.

The first wheel went fine. Packing and adjustments went well.

The second wheel is different. The packing and adjustment went fine. With the wheel raised and somebody manually holding the brake controller I can still spin the tire with some effort. The brake is adjusted with plenty of drag without the controller activated. The brake does grab some but not like it should. The hub is in good shape. The original brake that came off did not have the same wear as the first brake - plenty of pad left.

I am doing PS first. Any thought or ideas are appreciated on why tire still spins with controller activated.

I have not burnished the brakes and didn't figure there was a need if I can spin it without a load.

Thanks

Check the voltage at each magnet. Low or no voltage... Check your brake wires
If it's the wheel where the brake wires inside the axle I would be looking there
Could be a bad magnet as well.

Pull your 7-way from the truck and pull your break away. Wheels should lock tight. If not, check your magnet ohms and wiring.

If they lock, check your controller gain.

Thanks. I had already tried pulling the breakaway but had to pull fairly hard and it never came out so used truck instead. It does work as it has come out before.

Is there anything mechanical to look out for?

I hope to finish this job this weekend.

Thanks

I thought I saw a post that just hooking up to some trucks and using the brake when not moving will not trigger the trailer brakes. I’m not sure…. Pulling the brakeaway was noted as the best way, assuming your batteries have a charge in the rv….

This would REALLY worry me. If it wouldn't come out in my driveway, I wouldn't want to test it on the road. Too many other things to give way before the breakaway. At less then $20 to replace, why take the chance?
