Brake update report

I finally have news on my poor braking.
Lippert has agreed to replace everything. Backing plates, drums, seals, bearings.
Dealer took passenger side apart and found grease all over the drums.
Whether that was from me over heating the brakes, from dragging them all the time, or it was always there.
I don't know.

But soon I will know. Should be done by the end of next week.
If no change then disk brakes here I come.

That's awesome Klassic! Hopefully it takes care of your braking problem. Free is a heck of a lot cheaper than adding the disk brakes!

Grease in the brakes would definitely make them pretty much useless. Lippert likes to use china bearings and seals. I always replace with timkin US made bearings and any brand US or Japan made seals. It's one of the first couple mods I do in a new trailer.

Klassic you might want to see if you can trade new brake parts with dealer toward disc brakes.....
Would be the cheapest way to get disc.
I'm sure they can always use brand new brake parts....
Just an idea

I tried that last year when this all went down.
They said no because the trailer wasn't engineered for disk brakes and they would have no part of that.
Had it of been now, where they have the disk brake option then it probably would be a different story.

Well that's interesting... the option is on the Designer but it is required with the CSA certification.
Maybe I should take my shoddy brakes to the Ministry here and see what they say about these brakes coming on 14k+lb trailers

Well guess what? Add me to the grease on the brakes![emoji35]
Looks like I need to make a decision now. Replace with crappy drums or bite the bullet and upgrade. Waiting for the results from Jims disc brake conversion.

Earl,
Where do you source bearings and seals from? Napa or oreilly? Someplace else?

I get my Timken bearings on Amazon, usually. Seals I get just about anywhere provided they aren't china made. Seals don't have to be US made, just not China. Get the numbers off the original bearings and seals. Seals may not have numbers on them or be difficult to see/find.

I never use the ez lube to grease my bearings, I pull it apart and clean and pack them. Always, always install new seals when you take it apart.

While hydraulic disc are great, properly adjusted, in good shape, with no grease and minimum 10 gauge wiring, electric brakes perform well. You also must have a good properly adjusted brake controller. There are so many junk brake controllers on the market. You'd be surprised how many people don't adjust them properly.

An exhaust brake is a beautiful thing. If you don't have one, get one! Best money I ever spent on my truck was installing a Pacbrake. I go down grades and never touch my service brakes.

Just wondering if this has been limited to the 2016 models and was there an actual problem or did the factory just use to much grease?

This was the other drum that had grease. Not as much as the first one. I only had 50% braking power. Curbside rear and street side front were the affected brakes. You can see where I wiped the magnet surface on the drum. No wonder why the 20 mph test failed.
