Camper surge protection
Hey guys-
While reading my new camper manual, I read that the breakers and fuses don't fully protect the camper from surges and brown outs. What do you suggest for protection and how do I install it? What's pricing like? Seems like a good idea.

I have a Progressive Industries 30A EMS. (Electrical Management System). Ordered from Amazon for $269. Does alot more than surge protecting. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

I use a Progressive Industries EMS-PT30. It plugs into the pedestal and you plug your trailer in to it.

T/T 30 or 50 amp? Do you wan t to hard wire or plug in? You start plug in +/- $100 up to several hundred for hard wire. Its really a matter of " worry factor" on your part. Lots of people have rved for years w/o one, while others have had parts fried their first outing. It also depends on the rv park you use. Cheap parks are cheap for a reason.

I just installed Progressive 50amp hard wired. Fairly easy to do. Won't get stolen of the post, not exposed to elements.

Hardwired units are fine...as long as you can get access. If not, you'll have to use the post type or pay big money to have a hard wired unit installed.

True. Self install of a hardwire unit is probably not for a novice

Take a look at where your power cord enters the vehicle and try to find a good area close by where you can install the unit. If you're reasonably handy, this is not a difficult installation. The hardest part of my installation was snaking a cable up an exterior wall for the display unit.
Here you can find the installation instructions and decide if you're up to the task: http://media.wix.com/ugd/439d5a_bdb5...0bfa0fbb39.pdf

My cable enters the unit in the back and disappears into the camper. Looked underneath..and I would have to take down the belly cover to access it. Not a shot in Heck that's happening. All campers are different. And no access in the camper either. Sucks. Had to resort to the "hang-on" type. But I have devised a way to secure it so no one can steal it.

Hey TWP....I had the same issue as you. I ended up installing it behind my converter. It was tight but it works. I mounter the display right next to the converter.

Access to the back side of the power panel was pretty easy on the 5th. The back wall of the basement comes out and it's wide open. I located the remote display like Camping did. I had a pole-mount for the HTT and was always concerned that it would go for a walk-about or I would forget it. Neither happened in the 2-ish years I used it tho. But a built-in is much more convenient and I know it won't get lost.
I've developed the habit of turning the main breakers off in the panel when packing up. I like watching the display telling me everything is OK before I snap the breaker on when setting up.
