Can I walk on the roof?

As the title says... can I walk on the roof of my 5er? the vent over the bedroom seems to be cracked, had a heavy rainfall last night and there was the odd drip coming from the roof vent.

Can I walk up there to repair it? Or do I have to support myself to replace the vent cap?

Thanks

I would not walk on it in that case. Just lay a half sheet of plywood on the roof to disperse the weight and lay on it to work on the vent.

You may walk on the roof.. if you can or not is up to you....

Seriously now... as long as your not over 225lbs or dancing up there .. there is no reason why you cannot walk on it. Use soft soled shoes and wipe the soles off before you walk up there.. (in case of stones or something in the tread to cut the roof)

If the factory did not put a ladder on, your roof may not have structural members designed for walking on the roof. So just to be on the safe side, I would agree with Norty1 to just lay a piece of light plywood up there to spread the weight. While you might get away with no damage without the plywood, why take a chance ? JMHO

Sound advice. Especially not knowing the structure of your roof.

What brand of rv do you have. Before I purchased my Jayco, I ask Jayco that question. When I took delivery of my 31.5 FBHS, I again ask the service manager at the dealer. Both answers were the same. "All Jayco RV's have solid roofs and can be walked on"

I've walked on my 23.5 many times to etenabond it and wash the roof, no problems. I wouldn't tap dance up there but if you take it easy you'll be fine.

I get on my roof regularly to inspect, wash, and when getting ready to travel to sweep off the slide out roofs. I weighed 233# until recently (197# as of today WOHOO!!) and the roof supported me fine. Now that I am 36lbs lighter it is much easier to get up and down

Can I walk on the roof?

I have a 2012 29bhs with a roof ladder and at 275 was up there bleaching the roof. I walked very gingerly and try to stay along the edge as much as possible. I thought about plywood to disperse weight but one splinter (factory cut or not) now you have a pinhole in your roof. Flip flops up the ladder and barefoot for me.

The op is not asking about your rig, he is asking about his used 98 rig that did not come with a ladder. I would err on the side of caution when giving advice on a unknown rig.

Just saying!

Does anybody out there know of ANY RV manufacturer, past or present, that states that you can't walk on the roof? Roof ladders are considered "options" on most trailers anyway. It was on my 2012 Eagle. How would he be able to perform regular maintenance such as caulking, roof cleaning etc. What if the AC went out? I don't think an RV maintenance dept. would rent a crane to remove it. Nope, they'd just walk on his roof and fix it.

My first MH could not be walked on. It was a Winnebago. The roof aluminum roof was attached to plywood about 1/4 inch. If I put my weight in one place it would go thru the roof.

My fil had a 03 Outback tt that had a rubber roof. The wood under it was very thin and could not support weight concentrated in one spot. It did not have a ladder. I have been told that a ladder is not a factory option if the roof will not support walking.

Sometimes common sense will work in the absence of clear data. I had a 1975 Terry with metal roof, no ladder, and I wouldn't have stepped just anywhere but if I made sure to step on the supports it was fine. If the supports aren't clearly defined by looking a little downward pressure with your foot will tell where the stiff points are. Of course as I get older that balancing on one foot while probing with the other is getting a little dicey

Has anybody ever damaged the roof structure by walking on it? I am over 275 lbs and washed my roof today. I was staying on the edge but by the time I was done I was walking all over the thing. My only fear was falling off, not damaging the rv.

I have the same year with a metal roof and I always use plywood to spread the weight if I need to go on the roof. Mine does not have a ladder and even so, I would err on the side of caution.
