Catastrophic Schwintec failure on interstate
On our way back to Fl from our west trip. In a work zone one lane I-40 in Arkansas. Look in mirror and front of kitchen slide is out a ft and sparks by tires. Slide is just missing concrete barrier. Thank god I was just at end of construction, pulled off but no real shoulder and big slope. Could only get about 2 ft off interstate or FW would of rolled over. Found forward schwintec drive shaft dropped to ground and bent back and jammed into the dirt. I could not move it and had no way to cut it. I back up FW about 2 ft and rod bent back out of the ground. Now I could push rod up some and I bent it and clamped it to slide skirting. So now slide is a ft out and cannot move cause rod is bent and jammed into the lower block. Drove 15 miles to our scheduled stop. Called every repair shop, dealer and mobile within 100 miles. Repair shops 3 months out, mobile repair non wanted to even come out. Tried everything to get shaft free so I could move slide. Next day went to Lowe’s and bought $250 dollars worth of cutting tools to cut the lower gib block out. The oscillation tool I bought with six metal blades finally cut the block where I used a sledgehammer and big punch to bust it out with the drive rod. Have two 2x4 cut to hold slide in. I can push it in and out about 18 inches while running back motor. We can now access the fridge and stove. I have a year left on my extended warranty and called them a tech called me back I sent him pic of the shaft touching the ground. He said he never heard of that happening and I told him I was gonna try and cut the block out. He agreed and I told him to document all of this for the claim.
So during this trip front closet rod broke clothes all over, water heater died, heater only blows warm air, bedroom 7 ft wood molding fell off and tore up head board, jacks will not self level and now this.

So sorry to hear of your misfortunes. Sounds like a few years worth of mishaps rolled onto one! Please post your rv model.

Grumpy,
Believe me I will be talking with them as soon as I am home. U might remember my post from two years ago. Comming back from my camp the back of the kitchen slide came out. The repair shop contacted Jayco and I LCI. Jayco told them to make a metal bracket and install so shaft would not disengage motor. I never even thought the shaft could drop to the ground. It looks like the upper and lower gib blocks are exactly the same. And I would assume that LCI just presses a piece of metal into the lower block to hold the shaft. My lower block has a perfect round hole completely thru it. Looks like there plug fell out. I cannot believe the rod dropped to the ground bent back and stopped about an inch from the tire. I cannot even imagine what would of happened if it went under the tire. It would of ripped the entire rod out and went either up thru bottom of FW or thru the vehicle behind me. Years ago one of the manufacturers had a recall. The LCI fix was a Teflon block that u pushed up the bottom of the side rail and installed a screw thru the rail to hold block in place. This was there fix to hold shaft from dropping from motor. They still sell the kit. They told me it did not effect Jayco. Well guess what!!!!

Actually don't, but totally agree you would think there would be a screw at the bottom of the lower block to stop it from dropping out.

Yeah, like a set screw with thread locker on it.
2 options I can see for you
A. Trade it in.
2. Burn it.
Back in 15-16, I had a Forest River product that was, literally, everytime we went out in it something broke. OMG, I could go on for hours of the things that went wrong,... tire/wheel that came off, water tank that fell out, ..... the last was a ceiling fan blade that came off and nearly smacked DW. That was the last straw. She, and I, wanted to do the latter but instead did the first option. Which led us to our Northpoint.
I feel for ya,... been there, done that.

Got it. Just noticed my Android phone does not display signature info unless I open JOF as a webpage.

That's a memo to most all smart phone users, with the full site option, you don't miss anything on the site. I used to have the same question until I changed the method of display on the JOF site. If you want to try it access the forum on the smart phone and click user cp, go to the very bottom of the page and there is a box with 2 options: mobile or Jayco owner. You can get a better forum view with the Jayco owner option.

Lake Huron,
Believe me I came close to rolling it off the interstate. It was no fun laying in the highway trying to get the drive shaft out of the ground and secured. So the whole forward schwintec will need to be replaced along with the slide tracks.

I just found this on line from LCI. Looks like the top of the shaft has strakes in it to keep it in place from dropping down. So the repair shop made this garbage metal bracket ( just a thin metal bent to an EL and screws holding it place. It is under the lower block holding the shaft up. So this shaft goes thru the lower block and spins in the hole. Warranty company would not pay for that repair because it is not a slide part. LCI states to replace the entire Assy if shaft drops from motor. So now I will be making them replace this entire assy also.
This is just another stupid design. The lower block should not have a hole all the way thru it like the top does.

Good Lord! I'd be ALLLLLLLLL over the phone.
Makes me wonder. Are some units just lemons? And some aren't? Is it REALLY because it was Friday at quitting time when they built it? Is it a particular shift that day? I mean I actually know people with the same model and haven't heard a peep out of them. I just don't get it.

Jay
Not much choice back in 2015 when I ordered mine. Most other ones and big class A were schwintec or that cable system that was a joke. Most of the original problems were for the outriggers bending letting the floor bend, using not enough rollers, rollers digging into floor bottom. I have always lubed up everything and kept tracks clean. I by self and pushing in and out the forward part of slide with all the heavy stuff. So it moves by one person and this failure is all on LCI stupid shaft retention. I have yet to find on line another failure like mine dropping the shaft out the bottom. A bunch of failures is shaft dropping down just enough to disengage motor but not like this. The lower track on slide screws from side and bottom. That has to be replaced. I cannot see how u can get to these screws unless slide comes out. Maybe the very forward part of the track does not screw in from bottom. All my rollers have Teflon pads on bottom of slide put in by factory service center. If slide comes out I will pay for all new rollers and to add even more and Teflon wear pads.

I've seen posts where people install thin steel plates to ride on the rollers. I might do that.

Man I am so sorry this is happening to you. You are obviously much better versed in the mechanical matters. I have no idea what I would have done had it happened to me. I have a '21 36FBTS so I read your post over and over, then ran over to see my notes on what slides I do have. We are total newbies at this, so everything gets my attention. Our bedroom slide is a Schwintec, and the kitchen slide is a Slim Rack. Don't know if it is any better, but looking forward to reading about your resolution and a better than new slide.

We have a Schwintek in our bedroom on our 2011 rig. The bedroom slides are way lighter than the ones that give the most problems. I am convinced that weight is one big issue.
Ours has basically been flawless. I do lube the rails and motor with PTFE spray as recommended. (I hope that is the correct acronym)

Yup u got the slimrack. Only problem I have seen on them is a bad motor. They started using slimrack in 2017 or 2018 on big slides. We all wish we had slimrack but u cannot just swap it out.

Yes! Ours is a little newer but also flawless. I think like you that the heavier slides are the problem. Love my old school thru-frame for the big sliders. We are 39’ and 13k#.

Rock, very sorry to hear this. We will be keeping a closer "eye" on our unit. We are still having issues with the kitchen slide. Although there are now 7 outriggers on that slide, one tire is still rubbing. So either the "new" leaf springs are too weak for that side or the axle is bent. We will be taking it back to the company that replaced/fixed our outriggers so they can take a closer look.
