Chesapeake Bay Bridge/ Tunnel

Has anyone crossed the CBBT towing their fifth. We're planning to camp on the DelMarVa on our way down to Fla. and thought we would cross the bay using the CBBT. I noticed on their website that the height of the tunnels is 13'-6". Our Pinnacle is supposed to be 13'-3". We are kind of new at this and don't want to end up with the air conditioner lying on the road somewhere.

I`ve towed my TT across it. My FIL goes across with his Carriage 5er. Only thing to consider is there can be wind restrictions on RV`s when the wind reaches a certain velocity. They will not let you cross until the wind dies down, have to park and wait it out. However, this does not occur that often.

And it is a beautiful drive. I have always enjoyed driving the CBBT.

Thanks for the pictures Boss Wagon. They really jump started some memories. I was stationed at Little Creek Naval Base in the late 60's. I rented a home about 2 blocks from the beach near the south entrance to the bridge. We used to fish off the pier near the first tunnel entrance. We had some real good times there.

Afterthought: One night I was on base standing a watch in the Harbor Master's office and a ship (don't remember if it was US Navy) dragged its anchor and took out a couple of sections of the bridge. The scrambling to get it repaired started immediately. The nearest equipment large enough to handle it was found in the Gulf of Mexico.

Yes, it was indeed a US Navy Ship - the USS Yancey - that hit the bridge. He-Who-Drives-the-Tow-Vehicle was stationed on the ship at the time and was just showing me a chunk of the bridge that fell onto the deck of the ship that he brought home with him.

we just went though it end of April, a little narrow but no problem at all. There is a good parking area on the north of it and also a great state park before getting to the tunnel where we stayed the night.

Haven't been thru the tunnels in years in a RV - Is the propane thing still a required pull out at the check point and have the propane values checked that they are closed....

I know we had to pull out at a check point before entering the Hampton Roads tunnel last year and have the valves checked.
