I had the same Curt hitch that you do. Replaced it with a B&W Compnion. It made a big difference.

Had similar issues. B&W Patriot 16K ordered online made it all better. Wish I'd done the 18K as it's less assembly. I still know it's there on wavey concrete, but nothing bad. Wife sleeps through it now as someone else stated.

I had the same problem. It went away when I changed to a trailer that has a Moryde hitch. Kept the same truck and hitch.

Having had a trailer with no Mor Ryde pin then installing one I can say that Mor Ryde King Pin did reduce the chucking by about 75%. Fast forward to my current rig which I ordered with the Mor Ryde and 3 years later putting the Lippert shock kits on both axles made up another 20% improvement on the chucking reduction.

In combination the chucking has gone from the 1-3 back and forward cycles to 1 slower hardly existent movement.

Every trailer and TV combo is going to have it's issues and cycle based on road conditions, hitch, bed size, load and length. The key is slowing the see saw effect which give you the chucking motion. Airbags do help, but they did not as much on my combo as the Mor Ryde did.

5th airborne operates under the same principles just slightly different absorption process.

Sounds like a split between the MorRyde and replacing the low-end hitch.

I am wondering if the B&W with those long upright head support arms provides some hysteresis (less rigidity) than legs that meet the head at essentially pin-height?

Well, I found a low-cost place to start. I picked up a truly "just like new" Pullrite 1900 locally for $225, brought it home last night. The 1900 mounts on the existing industry standard rails in my truck.

We'll see how much improvement a "full-surround" hitch makes compared to the "bar" style cheapie. And still have some funds for a MorRyde pin box if the rig still has unacceptable chucking.

Another place to eliminate movement/noise/banging is where the hitch pins into the rails, I use thin rubber spacers between hitch and rails to take up the slack and make the pins fit real tight. Made a big difference in the banging going slow over uneven ground and a noticeable difference when pulling away from a stop.
I actually have to put all the pin weight on the hitch to compress the rubber slightly to help get the pins in. Rock solid!!
Also makes it virtually theft proof except for taking the head only.
Cheers

You are going to see a TON of difference between a good hitch and the sliding bar.

BUT, hitch upgrades will not help on some of these roads. The expansion joints and truck/trailer wheel spacing will cause a lot of movement. Most of the time slowing down will help.

Suspension. How close to your max cargo limit are you with your truck? You may need additional springing. Our Dodge needed it (installed TImbrens on it). Without it the truck was hitting the bump stops often, which felt like 'chucking'. I installed airbags on my Tundra for the same reason.

This is when I wish we had air suspensions like the big rigs (no, airbags are not quite the same, BTDT). Combine it with an isolated cab and you get a pretty cushy ride.

Some roads just suck and even with the perfect set up for your rig will be not great.

We’re running a mor ryde and B&W which is a great combo on most roads but we have some really jacked roads up north so...

I'm using a MORryde and a B&W Patriot. I still get some chucking. Called MORryde to confirm that the pin box was working as designed. I gave them the dust mark measurements from the MR and they confirmed that it's working as designed. They also told me that it will really only remove about 7075% of the chucking. Thats about how much it removed for me. I still get some under the right (bad) conditions.
JMO but I feel most truck/5er setups have some form of chucking. some more than others. Some have none. Way too many variables to know for sure how to cure it. The same cure for one guy doesn't make as much difference for the other guy.
One thing I know for sure is that unless your previous 5th hitch is a POS then switching 5th hitches won't cure chucking. I've towed my 5th wheel with both an Andersen and a B&W and the results are exactly the same.

My TV is an 2009 F450 DRW which by itself rides like a covered wagon on rough roads when not towing our FW. We have the MR pin box and B&W 20K Champion. I don't experience any chucking or galloping going down the road. I will still feel bridge joints and uneven concrete joints in the truck but I don't feel anything from the FW.

First pull with the Pullrite earlier this week. No noise, everything is really solid. Chucking is significantly reduced and at a different frequency - it doesn't jar TV riders in the same way. Much less annoying.

I don't think I will upgrade to a MorRyde, I will call this thread "closed" as far as I am concerned.

David, I have the Curt 16K hitch that CW (threw in) when I purchased my 2017 Eagle HT 27.5 RLTS. I did buy the rubber MorRyde pin box from another supplier after my 1st. outing. It did make a BIG difference in the chucking when going over expansion joints etc. on our upstate NY road system.

What is the approximate cost of adding shocks to a 5er?

I did mine for $260.00 all in.

It does help with the galloping. Only 1 to 1.5 times after a large road bump vs 3-4 without.

The LCI version is what I did from etrailer. They were on sale at the time.

There are arguments for angle, but mine work well.

My Ht 28.5 came with the MorRide Pin box. Great! Must look in review mirror every now and than to ensure the 5er is still there.
