Driving test

I took mine in a U-Haul - much easier than taking the Seneca because we live in it full time $39.00. Make sure that U-Haul knows what your doing so they give you the one that everything works - the DPS guy said that they keep one truck legal for Driving tests

I’m just envisioning myself driving to Carrollton with my dually and trailer to go test.

How far in advance do you need to take written test vs driving? Can they be done same day? We have limited time back in TX before hitting the road again.

If I can make a suggestion (from my previous experience)...get out of the "big city!" Go take the exam (both written & driving) in Sherman, Greenville, Paris...go to the smaller rural DPS offices...it's a much nicer experience in my opinion.

I forgot about Sherman! I can stop in and talk with our dealer at the same time. Good call!

Anyone who has a fifth wheel and has taken the Class A in TX, any input?

Back to reading the CDL manual further.

Glad I only come in under 20K! I always assumed any extra licensing was for commercial use only!

On the other hand, I'll keep this in mind when we start getting into a MH. I'm pretty sure ours will be over 26K...

Jack you sound like my wife trying to pimp me out to make a little extra money! No way I want to pay the insurance premium that comes with having CDL!

You might be ok...but when you figure in the dolly and/or toad, you'll probably be over.

Really?? If there's no premium I might as well get it. I was told that some insurance companies will charge you more for the CDL. It wouldn't surprise me if I'm wrong...it's not the 1st time...just ask the DW! Heck I'm in law enforcement and I just now learned that I need this license after 1 1/2 years of towing the 377!

I have never (yet) had insurance company charge more for my CDL class A. Kept it from years ago when I drove tractor trailer. Only problem I've ever had at DMV when renewing licence, they
ask if I drive interstate or intrastate. When I tell them neither, they do t know what to do............LOL

It will cost more $ when you renew it than regular license

There are specific sites that do non-commercial Class A exams. Carrollton is the closest to me and Sherman doesn’t make the cut.

I’ll write back in a few weeks once I get back to Texas and through the hoops.

You're right, I'll probably be okay. I just looked and the GVWR is 19,500, but GCWR is 37,500!

So, if I'm towing the wrangler, I'll be good. If I'm towing my truck (~6800 lbs empty) I might be close!

Question for those who recommended a U-Haul rental for the test. Does the vehicle you’re driving need to have a GVWR over 26k? The largest U-Haul truck GVWR is only 20k.

If that doesn’t matter, I’ll spend the money to rent one that works and use that instead.

Thoughts?
