critters

We have had our 2012 Jayco Eagle 3 years now and have never had mice in it. I was de-winterizing it the other day and noticed something had been in the basement storage area. I set a few mouse traps but I would find them tripped and the bait gone. I went this morning and got a rat trap. I discovered I have little red squirrels in there. Caught two at once on the first try. Reset it and got another. Reset it again and will check it before dark. Had these little critters several years ago in my wood pile by the shed. Between me and my pellet gun and a hawk that was hanging around we got rid of them. Have not seen them around for awhile. I guess they are back. They are destructive little critters like chipmunks. They are about half the size of the Grey squirrels we have around here.
I have the Arctic Kit and checked the bottom pretty good and no holes. Found out they are getting in through the bottom of the propane storage compartment. They chewed a hole in the insulated ceiling of that compartment and got into the basement. I'll get some steel wool tomorrow and stuff it in the hole and patch it up. Hope they don't have a litter of young ones in the area where the hot water tank and furnace are.

Fortunately we've not had them in our trailer, but have had them on our house - what a mess. Finally just got rid of the bird feeders and plugged every hole we could find. Wish you well and hope you got them all.

Checked the trap before dark and got another one. Reset the trap and will check it in the morning.

Set up a trail camera and found out they are getting in going straight up the landing gear. I don't see a good way to seal that off.

I'd cut and fabricate hardware cloth around the opening?

Well, kill trapping squirrels this time of year is illegal regardless of the why. Sprinkling moth ball flakes on the ground, Cayenne or ghost pepper powder around the landing gear will be a huge deterrent! A simple sniff of the powder will deter them for a long time.

I read where if they get into your residence you can kill them if done in a quick humane way.

You can use Snap Traps except in Hawaii, Alaska and Wash DC.

I spray foamed my landing gear gaps with the Pest Control expanding foam. Apparently it tastes terrible so critters donít chew through it. I was skeptical but 2 years later after sealing every nook and cranny with it Iíve not had a critter in the 5th wheel. We were at a campground that was a walnut forest and the squirrels there were horrendously overpopulated. There were two campers destroyed while we were there, we were thankfully spared or my sealing job worked well. Good Luck!!!

It varies by state and species. As example this is from NY:

Red squirrels (unprotected species)

* Can be killed at any time, no limits on numbers.

All states have provisions for nuisance animals. In Missouri and Kansas, you can trap nuisance animals year-round but Kansas requires a permit. I had the Kansas permit when I worked for an animal damage control company and there were no limits on trapping during breeding season. I don't see that provision in Colorado's nuisance laws either:. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...OJ2Hy_-nXIRILH
