Dealer wants more $$ after delivery! Seriously??

We picked up our new 5th wheel, signed all papers, & took delivery. 2 days later the dealership calls me & says we forgot to charge you for your sidewinder & we need you to pay $1400 more. I told them according to my calculations & the fact that I had specifically asked the finance person whether every chg & credit was included in the final price & he said yes, that I wasn't paying it. I do realize that I messed up by not having them give me a complete breakdown of every penny, but our numbers were in agreement. I asked for one & then forgot to press forward & get it. Anyway, would like some advice. What would you tell the dealership?

Thanks!

You know if a mistake was honestly made. If it was an honest mistake it's up to you personally to decide if you want to help them out or not. Legally I don't think you owe a thing, ethically & morally that's your call alone.

On my TT purchase I specifically wanted a Equal-I-zer. Sales rep said no problem. Upon installation the we're putting a husky WD hitch together. I stopped them, shared the problem. In the end my paper work said WD Hitch & Set Up, not the brand---my fault for not confirming. Sales Rep plead ignorance of the brand and claimed here thought a equalizer hitch was just a generic term for a WD hitch. In the end, they don't sell Equal-I-Zer, but did have husky Centerline but said the deal didn't have the $ to cover it. They wanted $250 more, at first I insisted I get what I negotiated for, in the end we agreed I'd give them $100 more and get the Centerline.

Not sure if I was taken or if it was an honest mistake, but 2 years later I'm a satisfied customer and they are still happy to have me as a customer. No bad blood between us.

What would the dealership say If you called then and said you forgot to add in the value of the upgraded mattress on your old trade in and wanted 1400.00 more for the trade in.... only difference is you might have trouble getting service from them

If you asked for an itemized bill of sale you shouldn't have to "press" for it. I see it as they didn't give it to you. Why? If it's truly the case, it would have beneffited them.

I'd tell them "a deals a deal". I'm sure if people start paying an after-the-facts-charge some dealers will make a habit of it. ... it sounds like a modern day form of "low balling"

IMO With the mark up on trailers they still got their $1400 out of you.

It may sound cruel but in business, all parties are supposed to be "big boys". So, I agree with others who say, "a deal is a deal".

I'm with troutslayer on this one, a deal is a deal. You didn't mess up...they did.

I would love to have a recording of the conversation when your dealer called you asking for more money. haha.

I always ask the "out the door" price from the dealer, they often play serious games with option costs, unit cost, cash down, etc....

So in the end the ONLY number that matters is the final price. If they signed the contract with the final price and you signed the contract with the final price and leave the dealership with the unit they have no recourse. In fact, I think a real business would have ate the cost and not put you into a position that compromises your relationship with the business. Now you have no faith in the dealership and how likely would you be to return after the sale if they can't get the basics right....?

Best of luck.

Whether it be a car or an RV I will make it clear to the dealer they can write all the numbers they want for base price, discounts, trade in, dealer prep, freight, accessories and taxes on the sales contract. The ONLY number I am interested in and must agree upon is the amount I will write the check for.

Re: Dealer wants more $$ after delivery! Seriously??

Mwebber78 couldn't have said it better...totally agree that a good dealer would have ate it. I just purchased a 33RLDS and my salesman quoted me a price with the second AC unit and forgot to add in the 50 amp prep package. When I mentioned this to him, he immediately ate the charge for it, stating that was his mistake. That was before I even committed....and yours was after delivery...what a joke!

I agree that the dealership is at fault. But what would be your reaction if you had paid $1400 to much and the dealership called to correct the error???

here's the rest of the story. the extra $$ was for the fifth wheel hitch that they installed in our truck as well as the sidewinder they put on our 5vr. The problem came into pay when we asked the, for a breakdown of all costs & credits before we finished the deal, the finance guy assured me everything was in the price & then among everything else, we forgot to insist ion the breakdown. We have decided to be ethical & pay for the work, but they need to rework the contract & remove the extended warranty & GAP insurance - this will give them their $$ but won't give the, their profit on the extended warranty, etc. we'll see what their reply is.

If I were in your position and were convinced that this was truly a mistake and both parties had some responsibility, I would offer to pay for the dealers actual cost (usually 50% of retail) for the parts and refuse to pay for any labour.....this way they would cover their actual cost for the parts.

Be careful of dealers that write on the contract "no other promises made" and in big bold Letters No Refunds

There mistake you have all paper work and doc. Meet them in the middle if you want, there is a market up on everything i think the 1400 is really not this amount, also they should give you a bill of sale with all items on it. There mistake.

I don't think you owe them a penny. They are the professionals and if they screwed up, well they need to bite the bullet. I bet they don't do it again.

Final resolution to this issue - after we informed them that we would pay the extra $$ if they redid the contract & took out the extended warranty & GAP insurance so our payments would be about the same or a little less, the dealer got back to us & told us that they would "eat" the cost - that it is an expensive lesson for them to learn, but wanted us to be satisfied customers. So, all is well.

Good outcome, they should have offered that up front but they were probably testing the waters to see if you would just pay it.

If they screwed up they should eat the cost, also if I need dealer service I would find another dealer.
