Today I got the rest of the brake lines ran. I then caped everything and pressure checked for leaks. Tomorrow I will remove the china races from the rotor/hubs and install the US made ones. Pack the US bearings and install with the seals. Then I will remove the drum brake assemblies and install the disc brake assemblies. Bleed the system and road test, hopefully.

Sooo...when are you making the rounds to help everyone on the JOF convert to disk brakes? You're doing a GREAT job Earl with the install!

Thats really nice looking work Earl. Did you do the bends yourself? The armored tubing and hold-downs look to outlast just about everything on the planet.

Yep, very versatile the leveling system is. Great for leveling, maintenance and tire changes.

I enjoy doing projects like this. Took 1.5 years for me to make the time to do my own. Lol had all the stuff, just didn't have time. I actually had to force myself to make the time. I'm not going into work tomorrow on my day off to work on it. 8 hours of OT tossed, but want this project done for labor day weekend trip.

I have a feeling you will not regret it, when tomorrow the job is done and the RV stops like never before.

A ripping good read, indeed. Thanks for the informing and motivating post.
Waiting patiently for the test drive.

Between your install commentary and Tom’s, I’m developing a plan (and a list of questions) for when I do mine. You have an obvious advantage, in that you know how to, have the proper tools to, and know the proper suppliers to customize your stainless brake lines. I envy you on that!

Today I spent 11 hours on the project. I drove the china races out and installed the US ones. Packed the new US bearings and installed those and the seals. I removed the drum brake assemblies and cleaned the spindles. I installed the caliper brackets. I installed the rotor/hubs and adjusted the bearings. Then installed the calipers. I installed the brake hoses. Bled the system several times. Was getting dark but I got some pics. Was too late to finish cleaning up the basement and do a test run and burnish in the brakes. Oh, I also made the final connections at the pin box. While I had it in the air, I greased the wet bolts.

I hooked my truck to it to be sure my factory brake controller would see and operate the Hydrastar ok and it did. I set the controller to heavy EOH.

Tomorrow after work I will finish up in the basement and take it out on the road.

All 4 of my drum brakes were shot including the drums with only 8100 miles. All shoes worn paper thin. Two almost metal to metal. All drums badly scored on the magnet surface. I mean badly scored! Lippert isn't using aggressive enough brake lining. Doesn't brake for crap and doesn't hold up. Magnets working so hard they chewed up the drums.

Would be interested in knowing all in what it cost you in parts and where you sourced them. Not just the hydrastar and disc's but all the little pieces hard lines flex lines couplers...
Yours should last longer than the trailer!

I can do that eventually. I bought items from Amazon, Summit Racing, Rockauto (Timkin US made bearings and races, National seals) and ebay.

I'm interested in this conversion when I get back from my current trip. I'll have about 10k miles on the NP and ready to service anyway.
The parts list and source would be a great resource for us. I really appreciate your photos and commentary! Hope I can match your quality!

This evening I did my test run and burnished in the brakes. They burnished in good, pic attached. I did about 20 burnish events. I barely made it out of the driveway and squealed the tires when I worked the manual brake. I have all kinds of brakes now. I did a 27 mile trip. I was burnishing the brakes so I didn't do hardly any stopping with the truck. So I don't know if I have a delay or how much. The little I used the truck brakes I didn't notice anything. Once back home I rechecked my lug torque and inspected for leaks. Even had time to install the automatic transfer switch for my inverter.

I never had brakes like I do now on this trailer! Even when new and empty, it didn't brake for crap. I'm excited to see how they do with normal braking and stopping.

We leave this weekend for a 3.5 hour trip to a state park for labor day weekend. So I will get a good feel of the system. Will be all hills and mountains with some highways.

I also included some pics of the Hydrastar actuator and the 7-way junction I used for the actuator. If you notice the two brass couplers on the pex, that's cause I drilled into them. Lol I measured and apparently was off, cause my drill bit came up between the two pex lines and chewed a notch in both. Pulled the drill down and water ran on me. Insert lots of cuss words. But I got the hole for the brake line and I was able to repair the pex easily.
