Disk Brake Conversion

I'm seriously considering having the conversion done. Obviously the big pros I see are better stopping and eliminating a heat source. Has anyone that has done the conversion found any cons to it. I couldn't think of any.

Thanks

I’ve been wanting to do this for some time now. My brakes are barely adequate (only ok, not great) but much better than before (I had grease on 2 sets).

The only “cons” I’ve heard of are (1) the price and (2) there is a slight lag time between the time you press the brake pedal and the time the brakes are applied. The lag time can be improved by positioning the brake controller as close to the axles as possible and by using a larger brake line.

Thanks Tom,
I had never seen anything about the lag time. I wonder if it is real noticeable.

I think it’s like 1/2 second or so. Hopefully one of the members who’ve done the conversion will give their experience with it.

I love by disc brakes. Intalled myself. I love not feeling that I may not be able to stop in time. Now I feel like I’m getting help stopping faster. Installed on my F350 with factory controller. Lag time ? Seems like when I first installed and did my testing to set brake gain I noticed it. But the longer I have been using them the less I notice it. Like anything the more you want to focus on something the more you might notice it. 31.5RLTS. 2012F 350

I used performance trailer braking to install them on our pinnacle. Install was done at our home in eastern WV. Just got back from Fla and braking is no longer an issue. Would highly recommend the conversion and the company. Took 2 installers about 5 hours.

Absolutely love my disc brakes. I do not notice any lag time. I have noticed when coming to a slow stop they will disengage before coming to a complete stop.

Between the Ford Engine-Exhaust Function and the Disc Brakes stopping is not a problem.
My controller is in the front compartment.

Thanks everyone for the info.

2naEagle - Did you ask P.T.B. about the disengaging? I would just be curious as to why they do that. I have a genset in my front compartment so we'll need to figure out an alternate mounting location for the controller.

Again thanks.

They put my controller in the passenger side compartment where the spare propane tank is. 30lb tank wont fit now, but grill size is fine. Thats what I carried there anyway.

I have not it is only the last couple of seconds at the stop. And only when going very slow.

I would say that is the factory controller doing that.
So when your in slow stop and go traffic the trailer brakes aren’t continually jerking you. The truck can handle very slow speed braking.
I think that’s the way it is programmed.

That makes a lot of sense.
Thanks for the input.

You probably notice it more because your brakes are giving such good smooth bite, and then the pressure lets off.
The electric brakes have probably been slipping way before your hydraulic pads have let off.
I would love to have your problem! hahaha. My brakes stink.

I'd like to do the IS & disc conversion if we keep the trailer and don't switch to a MH.

I've had no problems with the drums which means so far I haven't driven into the back of anyone. I try not to get where I need to do a very hard stop.

Glad to hear you haven't had any issues with your drum brakes, you're on the short list of people that haven't. Drum brakes are notorious for issues, one being heat. We plan on keeping our coach for a long time so I feel like the conversion is money well spent. I have no faith in the drum brakes stopping "anyone" in an emergency stop - like some fool that is texting and driving pulling out in front on me.

To each their own I guess.

Properly maintained and adjusted drum brakes should have no issues stopping a trailer in pretty much any condition where there is sufficient tire friction. Yes, disc brakes are better and more fade resistant but if you are overheating drum brakes then IMO you are overworking them or the tow vehicle can't handle the trailer (ie: overloaded gasser on a big downgrade). I can go down a 6% grade and only touch my brakes initially to engage the exh brake and hold 60-65 all the way down. My trailer brakes see little use until I get into a stop n go in town.

I'd rather have IS than discs, ideally I'd have both, it's only money.
