Get the 350/3500 and be done with it, no more thinking. The next part is what size bed do you want?

I had a 2011 f250 short bed, upgraded to a 2017 F350 long bed and love the extra fuel capacity and the extra bed space. Also don't have to worry about getting a sliding hitch.

Also as you might never be planning to upgrade now. I bet your first trip to an rv park, with your brand new rv still with dealer tags on it, you will be walking around and look at other 5th wheels and start thinking about..."well maybe in a year or two something like that would be nice"

The 350/3500 gives you more room for that dream to become reality.

Hello,
The best pulling truck according to a web site I look at is the Ram 3500 diesel dully. My wife and I was talking to a Chevy rep. at a Nascar race last year about dully vs single rear wheel axle. He said it's just more stability while pulling. You have to consider if the extra expense of having extra tires to buy is worth it. We have a Ram 2500 with the 6.4 Hemi pulling a 28.5 RSTS which has a 1500# tung and a 10,000# total trailer weight. I get about 7 to 9 mpg. On a good day with a tail wind, I'll get 10 to 12 on a flat grade. I'm looking to upgrade to a Ram 2500 diesel single rear axle. Torque is what you pull with, not horse power. The diesel Cummins has twice the torque compared to the 6.4 Hemi and the fuel economy is going to be between 15 to 20 mpg. The price of diesel is the same as super unleaded where I live so do the math. Good luck in your truck decession.

My approach was different, but ended up in the right place.

My previous rig was a hybrid camper with an 8ft toyhauler open deck on the front of which I could put two full sized quads. With having 4 quads in the family, I needed two on the rear of the truck via a diamondback atv carrier tonneau carrier on the back of the truck.

1600lbs of quad in the bed and 1,000lbs of tongue weight from the trailer, my self inflicted diesel requirement put me in a SRA F350. I even managed to find a used 11,500GVWR stickered one which gave me even more wiggle room. I've since sold off the toy hauler as we are now seasonals at our campground, and thus have upgraded to a '17 26.5BHS Eagle HT. I know I can hitch up to it and tow it without having to worry about payload - period. I'd not go backwards.

I do know that should we upgrade camping rigs again, I'll need to do the math to verify I don't need to move into dually range.

I learned long ago.... It's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Things don't become expensive till you have to buy them a second time because you didn't buy the right one the first time. lol

The MPG I was talking about was pulling my 5er. I get 16 to 20 not pulling with my 6.4 Hemi. A diesel would get 24 or better, not pulling. I'm getting that figure from my Son (in-law). He has a 2500 Chevy diesel.

He’s a liar, or needs to stop believing that useless gauge in his truck…

Those are some harsh words. I get 21-22 empty at avg speed of 70 calculated myself. At lower speeds I could see 24. Towing, best I’ve seen is 12.5. Typical is 11 give or take .5. Also at 70 or close to it.

Does that 21-22 include a regen? I have occasionally seen 20+, but only on the flats of west TX without a headwind.

Your towing MPG is very similar to mine. I'm getting 0.5 to 1.0 MPG better than you report, but I tow at 62, not 70.

Did you look at the link? These are people who actually track their mileage in Duramax 2500’s. The best are in the 17 mpg range, most are in the 14-15 mpg range.

Eagle HT 28.5 RSTS

Either truck you mentioned is a good truck..driver preference I myself have always been a dodge man till we bought our 2016 HT.
We’ve pulled to Washington state with no issues in the mountains In fact acceleration up hill was a breeze. We have a 2011 F250 super duty 6.7 scorpion .
If you plan on a bigger 5th wheel in the future yes a 350 or 3500 is the way to go.
If you go with a Dully you may be limited on places you can go or park.
After talking with other owners over the past 2 years fuel mileage is a little better( on diesel) than gas and the going uphills is better(with a diesel) from what I gathered from different owners.
Either way it’s a win!

Cheers

Lark

I have been pulling fifth wheels since 2002. They have all been in the 12-13k range. I started with a f250 gas and have worked my way up to a 2013 F350 diesel with the 11,300 gvw rating. I haul a few hundred pounds of tools and was always pushing the gvw on the truck. We have an Eagle 327 ckts now and I am as happy as I have ever been.

Eagle HT 27.5 RLTS

We own a 2018 27.5 RLTS and love it. We tow with an 2003 F350 7.3 Ltr diesel duly. We are recently retired and did the Pacific Northwest this summer and were greatful for the extra power in the truck. Some of the hills we encountered were steep. If you’re in the market for a truck go with the one ton. You’ll never regret it. Also, many start with a smaller rig and move up as time goes on. Might as well have a truck that can handle anything you arpttach to it.

Enjoy your travels

I have gone F250 diesel, regretted it and then went Ram 2500 gas and really like it. My situation is different, I don't have a FW and am not taking long trips like you will be (yet). The power of the diesel was nice but the extra cost associated with it wasn't worth it for me. And, the F250 was in the shop all the time...not related to it being a diesel. As far as 4wd I wouldn't go without it...it's one of those things that I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it. It's not an off road thing as much as it is a pulling a lot of weight and might need the extra traction in a gravel mountain campground thing. My 2 cents worth. Enjoy whatever you decide!

I have a 2015 Eagle HT 27.5 RLTS (Purchased May 2014) and pull it with an '06 F150 Lariat 4x4 with the 5.4 Triton gas engine. We absolutely love the trailer and the truck does just fine pulling, although most of my towing has been within 200 miles on relatively flat roads. The DW has the trailer decorated to her liking and I have everything I could possibly need stored inside. Since my brother suggested (and presented me with) a Tekonsha P3 brake controller it's an even better trip than before. If I were to move up to a F250 I wouldn't even know I was towing. That being said I will be needing to buy a new (to me) TV soon (223,000 miles and counting). I would like the F250 just for the added strength of a 3/4 ton all the way around.

Hi Planemaker and welcome. The wife and I have the same 5ver. ours is a 2017 27.5RLTS. We absolutely love it and so do our three Labs. Lol I live in upstate NY and have been towing mine with a 2016 Ford F-150 with a 5L engine. It really does tow nicely until we start pulling the steep mountain roads here in NY,VT, and MA, I am going to upgrade to an F-350 gasser here in February. I will get the 4x4 as I do have a rather large driveway to snowplow. A friend has a two year old Dodge diesel and pulls a 28.5RKDS with his. Big bucks for the diesel!

3500 Dodge Ram

We have a 2005 3500 Dodge Ram diesel and tow a 27.5 Eagle HT (2016). Hardly even know it is behind me. We get about 14.5 mpg towing. Love the truck.
