Electrical Problem

Has anyone experienced wide fluctuations in campground amperagres. One minute the amperage is 115 the next minute its 105. I can't figure out whats going on. Can anyone help?

Are you talking amps or voltage? If voltage, my parents have seen it, at an old State Park with an old power grid, that was not designed for all the modern TTs. At that park in the heat of the summer the voltage would fluctuate as people would cycle their ACs.

That is a dangerous situation in that a 10 volt fluctuation can toast a lot of different electrical components and appliances. I lost a TV and microwave at home when the voltage dropped on the generator we were using during a power outage. Surge protectors only provide protection from spikes so won't help you with low voltage. It's best to avoid spots with fluctuating currents.

I've found Surge Guard units have protected my last 2 trailers beautifully. Either the hard wired unit or portable one. Good insurance for protection. look here: http://www.campingworld.com/shopping....s9phZhav.dpbs

I second that, having had one for four years now. And not just protection in campgrounds. I parked in a relatives driveway and was offered power from inside their garage. I wondered why I still had no power and the EMS had detected a reversed ground on that outlet. The only place I hook up without it is at home.

This can be very normal in campgrounds. So get a surgeguard as mentioned above.. it will save your camper from many problems.

We have a Progressive Industries 50 amp unit that will shut down with either a too-high or a too-low voltage reading, and protect all components in the trailer. It's a little pricey, but what cost will you have if you have to replace several of your electrical units ? Seems good insurance to me.

Low voltage will damage motors but not electronics. However spikes often come when voltage is unstable, and that's why you need spike protection.
