Electrical Wiring Disaster

Well, Friday I went to my storage site to get my brand new 2016 Eagle ready for a trip and found that a large rodent had got into the unit and chewed up a bunch of wiring, even chewed off the handle of one of the low point drain valves. And who knows what else! I would maybe attempt the repairs myself but don't have a decent winter-time place to work on it. I haven't contacted my dealer yet (will do that tomorrow) but was wondering if, in your experience, will a dealer who does maintenance and different types of warranty work do wiring repairs? What a nightmare!

Sure, as long as you have deep pockets.

Wiring is generally not too difficult with the right tools and a schematic.

You should be able to get your hands on one.

Insurance claim? I would also look at having a certified electrician look it over or do the electric side.

Also you may have water line issues. A friend had a squirrel get into their unit, not only destroyed wiring, but also plumbing to the tune of $3,000+.

How big of a rodent do you think? Any idea how it got in?

I know I can fix almost anything! But the locations of some of the piping could make it a real challenge to get the tools in to make the pex crimps. As for wiring, for the 12V good crimped wire connects can fix them. The 120V could be more challenging as electrical boxes are required for splices, so it might be best to pull new wire. I'd contact Jayco with your vin number and ask for both the wiring and plumbing diagrams.

In reality it might be worth an insurance claim, as it could be a LOT of work.

If your insurance covers rodent damage I would certainly use. Repairs like this can quickly become expensive and the scale of the damage is identified.

My insurance specifically excludes rodent damage. Initially I thought nothing of the exclusion, then last summer I close friend who stores his trailer on his personal ranch had this happened -- net result a 2010 5er was totaled. The repair cost escalated based on how much had to be disassembled in order to make the repairs. His was a unique situation, it was ground squirrels, and they bedded down for the winter in his trailer, had babies and huge stores of nuts were brought in.

I thought about changing insurance to eliminate this exclusion, but then I just decided never to park long term next to a almond orchard.

I doubt your are looking at the scale of damage he had -- but my point is if your insurance convers this claim, make the claim.
