Exhaust Fan Trim

I replaced the exhaust fan in my bathroom but the vertical leg of the trim is only 5-7/8" and is just short of closing the gap. I need to extend the trim and contacted MaxAir/AirExcel and they sent me a new garnish section and said I could trim a piece off of the new section and attach (?) it the section installed to close the gap. I would like to know if anybody has a simple idea on how to do this? Thanks.

I cut mine with a cutoff wheel but a hacksaw will work...

I did the same for my bathroom vent, and had to get this from eTrailer...
trim a little and it fits perfect.

Here's a complete video on a MaxxAir installation, but if you skip ahead to 7:40, it shows the trimming and fitting of the inside garnish.

Cutting the garnish ring is not the problem. I would like to know how to attach a trimmed section of the new garnish that they sent me to the existing garnish ring so I have enough vertical leg to close the gap at the top. How do I hide or cover the seam between the two pieces so it looks like a finished garnish ring? Thanks again.
