Favorite Campgound in Black Hills

Headed to the Black Hills of SD late this coming April. Looking for your favorite campground. Towing a 2018 Pinnacle that is 43’. Looking for a pull through with full hook ups and close to interstate. Staying 2-3 days so we can see the local sights.

We stayed at Days Inn just off I-90 in Sturgis. Lot of room, good rates.

Elkhorn Ridge Tho' we usually stay at the Rafter J Bar near Hills City, we have stayed at Elkhorn Ridge when heading west on I-90. A very new campground with many sites for large rigs.

Elkhorn Ridge here also. Very handy, easy in and out. Right off interstate, close to Deadwood.

We have stayed at the Mount Rushmore KOA twice. It's perfect for kids, they have a lot of activities for them to do. Rafter J is also very nice

Sooner,
If you haven't been in that area before I recommend a drive down the Spearfish Canyon Highway, as well as a visit to Deadwood's Adam's Museum and Mount Mariah Cemetary.
Happy trails!

A few years ago when went to the Black Hills, we stayed 6 nights at Rafter J Bar Ranch.
I highly recommend this place. Nice people, very clean and they have great breakfast specials.

Here is a 2nd vote for the KOA in Hill City (https://koa.com/campgrounds/mount-rushmore/). They have a nightly bus to lighting ceremony at Mount Rushmore that is a must do. Also, consider going to the Crazy Horse Memorial, if you are into Indian History (this is better the then the Smithsonian American Indian museum in DC).

I recommend you sign up for the KOA membership card it you stay at a lot of KOAs. You get a 10% discount and can earn free stays for only $30 per year. If you have the Allstate RV towing insurance membership is free.

Another campground we like was Whistler's Gulch in Deadwood (Home). They used to have a trolley that would take you downtown for a couple of bucks so you would not have to fight for parking and can enjoy some adult beverages. Whether you drink or not, you have to to go to Saloon#10 where Wild Bill Hickok was killed when holding the famous Aces and Eights hand while playing poker.

Have fun!!!!! The Hill City and Deadwood area is one of our favorite trips.

Great thread!

I love the Black Hills and have ridden my bike past both Custer's Gulch and Rafter J Bar Ranch. We're in a larger 5er since the last time we camped in Custer (North Stockade Lake).
Last two years (and this year) we've been staying in the Spearfish SD city RV park as it's the home base of a bike race I do in June but my wife has been jonesing to get back to Hill City/Custer. I'll be keeping both of those in mind along with the HC KOA.

Lots of friends stay at Elkhorn Ridge and say it's really nice but I've never stayed there.

Good luck and have fun in the hills!

Spearfish city RV Park is nice too. We've stayed there. Some sites are a little tight but a beautiful spot to stay. Spearfish Canyon is awesome.

We spent a week in SD this past August, and stayed at the HorseThief campground outside of Hill City. We had a great time and really liked the campground.
