Firestone Transforce Blowout on Tow Vehicle

So this happened today on our way home from the Texas coast. Right rear tire on the truck blew pulling our 42' fifth wheel, on I-37 northbound in drizzle. We had just crested a hill and made it just a little way and couldn't go any further, tire was smoking bad and almost off the rim with the weight of the fifth wheel on it. We were off on the shoulder in a hurricane lane just over the crest of the hill so people weren't getting over fast enough to give us room. Called 911 and had Texas State Troopers come to the rescue. Positioned themselves at the crest of the hill, was safer to get under truck to get the spare. We called two roadside assistance companies and AAA came about the time I was finishing up putting on the spare. We left before Ram Roadside showed up, an hour and a half later. The original Firestone tires on our 2019 Ram 3500 with 29,000 miles on them. Harrowing day.

Wow, that’s scary as hell. Glad it turned out the way it did and you were able to maintain control.

Thanks. Yea, I couldn't figure out why the TPMS wasn't going off then I realized it's the damn truck tire that blew. It was smoking really bad so I think it was getting ready to catch fire. Lucky.

Not that you ever want to have a blowout when towing. But, I'd much rather have a drive tire go than a steer. Glad it all worked out safely for you.

Like everyone else has stated...glad everything worked out for y'all! Blowouts are not fun and very smart move on your part calling out DPS to help get traffic to move over for you!

Smart idea for the 911 call, and get a trooper to light up and warn traffic for you.

Ain't that the truth!! But I was just cringing with the thought of all that weight on the rim. Should find out today if the rim is ruined. Firestone has already told me they're not covering the tire cuz it was OEM on the truck. So waiting to hear back from the dealership. I foresee a big runaround. That's ok. I'm retired. Don't really care about the tire as they're gonna get replaced. More worried about the rim for now.

It's hard to tell from the pic, but it doesn't look too bad. Hopefully it will be fine. I would imagine that finding a replacement Longhorn wheel would be a little $$$.

Well, an update on the blowout. I research what happened further and have found out RAM 3500s do not have a TPMS warning system on them. At least my 2018 Ram 3500 SRW does not, according to the owner's manual and my testing. Totally ridiculous. Evidently, all they have is a TPIS system, tire pressure information system where they only show the tire pressure on the dash and does not warn for low pressure. So it's possible I could have been losing air pressure in the tire before the blowout but will never know. When the tire blew, no lights on the dash, no beeping, nothing. So this morning I dropped one of my tires down to 30 psi and no warning so I don't have the true tpms system on the Ram. So for three years i've been towing thinking the tpms system would warn me of low tire pressure and I don't even have the system. Just the pressure on the dash that you have to scroll through to see. I wonder how many other Ram 3500 owners do not know this????????

Well, I would be ordering 4 more sensors ASAP, now that you already know the value of a working TPMS.

I have a working internal alarm on on my 2017 Ford but I like the TST better. I still have the sensors.

What is the cargo capacity on your truck, we’re you possibly overloaded? The pin weight on my 355MBQS is around 3,200 pounds loaded plus you have your hitch weight, your weight, the weight of any passengers and other cargo. I could see 3,800 pounds on your truck easily, I get up to around 4,000 pounds when I am loaded for certain trips which is why I have a DRW truck.

Payload per door jamb is 4200#. Cat scales showed under when we were fully loaded, full fuel including auxiliary tank.

Thank you Sir! I too have a Ram 3500 and was not aware of this. I have a dually so six (6) more sensors coming for me. Now hopefully someone may chime in on how to put them on duallys.

Wow, that tire look rip and it's a wonder that more damage wasn't done it's a good thing that you guys came out okay. With only 29,000 on the tire that's crazy so yeah I would replace all of those tires when I got my new ram and transfer my Cooper on my new truck.

I just started a new thread asking about adding sensors to my tow vehicle. I'm assuming I can add them without any problem? I have the EEZ RV TPMS. They're $40 each so another $160.

I was expecting the mudguard to be completely gone at least. It wasn't. The tire pretty much stayed intact since it was a sidewall blowout. Closer inspection shows cracks in the rubber between the treads. Gonna call Firestone Corporate tomorrow. Probably get nowhere with them.

If you talk nicely to the right person, you may be surprised. My (then new) 2004 Tundra came with BF Goodrich as OEM. I drove over something at 11,000 miles that put a 3/4" cut in the tread, and had a flat. I put in a couple of plugs, which held, but took it to two different tire shops to get it patched correctly. Neither place could get it to hold air, so I bought a new one. I called Michelin (who owns BF Goodrich), and explained what happened, and that I knew there was no road hazard on OEM tires, but was disappointed in the tire not holding air with a properly applied galvanized patch inside. They were very nice to send a courtesy check that covered a little more than half the cost of a new tire. I was happy with that.

Glad you are all Ok. This is the first post I've read about a SRW rear tire blow out. We replaced the Transforce with Michelin Defenders. We also have the TST on the trailer and added them to the rear tires on the TV.
