For those with the Anderson Ultimate hitch?

I have used this hitch for almost a year now and only have one question of those that have it.

How do you see to back under the hitch? I can't see mine from the drivers seat and have tried several means to change that including the magnetic balls that we used to use on a travel trailer. I am used to backing under the old hitch and without a spotter, my wife, I can't get it done alone without 50 trips out and in to look.

The camera my truck is useless for seeing inside the bed.

Not sure if this will work, can you hold your phone with camera on with your right hand as you back up.
I can just barely see mine if I stretch and twist.

I took my middle seat headrest out. My youngest is too short to reach it right now, so it’s not missed.

Since our last truck didn't have a rear camera, so I learned to gauge how much of the front of the trailer I could see in the drivers outside mirror. That works best on a straight on hookup, and got me close for an angled hitching after a fair bit of practice. I just figured the DW and I needed to keep each other around to hitch up.

Now the F150 has a camera, but I still find myself using the mirrors. Maybe I'll get used to using the camera someday.

Do you have the camera option on your truck? Mine has a camera mounted in the cab brake light and I can see pretty much the whole bed. I have a Reese Goose Box and can see my hitch ball which is on the bed floor. It has a centering line that guides me over it almost every time. If you don't have one a camera system of some sort is maybe your best option.

2 trailer magnet balls

I have the 2 extension yellow magnetic balls found at anywhere, I leave them down , put one on the top bolt on the hitch and it will give you a real since of where you are. Like you with no spotter,or with the magic help of the wife, there is no end to the amount of times it takes to get lined up. Now with the balls it takes once or twice to dock.

Thanks for the ideas! I have tried one camera that did not work without a internet connection. The balls have not worked but I have them and am practicing. One problem is there is nothing magnetic back there.

Still looking at other suggestions. I have removed my center rear seat headrest.

In my F150 Supercab I can see it in my rear view mirror. Centering the hitch over the ball side to side is no problem. BUT, I still have the DW telling me how far back to go to get it lined up.
Sometimes she's not available so I jump in and out of the TV to center it front to back. BTW, love that Andersen Ultimate!

Happy RVing,
Jeff

I may have to try sitting high on a foam pillow while hitching because I can't see anything except the top of the hitch pin. I'll try that in the morning.

I use the yellow ball. You might try attaching the yellow ball stem to the hitch via tape or some other method. With mine attached magnetically, I backup until I push the ball about 2 inches. Rarely get in and out more than twice.

I'm happy to report that sitting high on a boat cushion allowed me to see the pin and back it under the pin box perfectly. I put the yellow magnet ball on the pin box when backing to give me some perspective on getting lined up straight but it really is not needed now that I can see everything.

I told my wife I can now go camping alone, hmmm....that did not go over well!

Norty I don’t have an Anderson hitch, but you can probably just put the rear seat back down and be able to see your pin. Doubt you need to remove headrest.

I have an 80 gallon auxiliary tank that is pretty tall and I can see when hooking up.

Good luck!

I use a water bottle that I cut the bottom off of and tied a string to the bottle. I slip the bottle on the AUH ball by standing on the tire and run the string over the side of the bed. I can see the top of the bottle as I back under the pin box. The pin box knocks the bottle off the ball, then I get out and use the string to retrieve the bottle.

I don't have the Andersen but use the iBall Digital Pro. Saves my neck even with a standard hitch.

I'm a little frugal... I carry a set of four 19" traffic cones in the bed of my truck all the time. When I'm hitching up, I set-up 2 cones so I line it all up; see attached photos.

I dont use the AUH - as i don't want a cracked trailer frame.. I use the Demco slider and use my cab Camera to hitch.. My Kenwood Radio has adjustable back-up guides for that camera. I set the guides to indicate a perfect hitch. works every time.. I just get her lined up and back following the guide, when my + reaches over the 0 i'm dead on.

I used an AUH on my prior rig... here's how I did it...

I placed one yellow ball on a pole to the bolt on the AUH; magnet sticks fine to that. That is just right so that when the ball is tilted forward the AUH receiver is over the ball - front to back.
Then, for side to side, I put a strip of grey duct tape running front to back on the top of the Fivers pinbox. This contrasts nicely with the black paint on the pinbox and allows the side to side to line up.

Worked very well. hth, but rig is gone so I don't have any pictures.

Thanks for the suggestions. My rear seat does not fold down but the seat cushion and installing the magetic yellow ball on the hitch pin allows me to get it right the first time about every time. We gave it a good test last week.
