Ford, Chevy, Dodge, anyone stand out for 5th wheels

Starting to dabble into considering a 5th Wheel. Looking at a 321RSTS, 10,310 Unloaded, 12,700 GVWR, dry hitch is 2045 (pin weight?)

A new TV would be needed. Do any of the big three HD trucks match up better for 5th wheels? Handling the pin weight, payload, level towing?

I thought I read that Ford and Ram beds are built too high for level trailering.

Thoughts, your recomendations?

I would kinda prefer Ram or Chevy over Ford (too many bad issues with Ford 250Super Duty in the past)

Can a short bed (6 1/2') work ok?

I know a diesel would be best but Id like to stay with a gasser, we're in Ohio(it's flat) and kinda don't travel out of the State)

Oh, and it would be my daily driver (short drive to work)

Thank you for your help

I’m a GMC guy but won’t try and sway you one way or the other. Any of the three can get the job done. With those weights I’d stick with my diesel but I️ understand that not all can go that route. If all flat towing a gasser can get it done but will obviously work harder to do so... test drive all three and form your own preference to go along with the responses you’ll get here.

I’ll step aside now and see how many will try and sway you one way or the other.

My only experience is with a 2015 323LKTS which has similar specs to what you are looking at. We just finished our first season with it. I feel as though we got it right the first time. We are pulling it with a 2011 Ram 3500 HD SRW diesel 6.5 ft. bed with a B&W Companion slider hitch. Seems plenty level when hitched. It is an absolute pleasure to tow. My previous experience was with a Fleetwood Flair gas motorhome. No comparison. Will never go back. Fuel mileage averages 11 when towing. Upgrades to the 5th wheel include Sailun tires on steel wheels, and Titan electric over hydraulic disc brakes. I have no way to directly compare, but I would not want to tow our rig with a gas truck. My previous truck experience is with Ford F150s with no towing experience, just hauling. Very impressed with the Ram and Cummins diesel. I would be looking at DRW diesel if we were towing anything longer/heavier. I am VERY pleased with our combination.

I can help you with Ram info. I currently have 2016 3500 SRW Mega Cab with 6.5 bed with diesel and pulling North Point 381dlqs which maxed out is 16,500lbs. Truck does great, getting 10 to 11 miles to gallon and I'm using Anderson Ultimate Hitch and have no leveling issues or turning issues.

My previous setup was 2014 2500 Crew Cab with 6.5 bed 6.4 Hemi. I was pulling a Grand Design Reflection 337 which maxed out at 14,000lbs. This truck did fine handling this camper, but was only getting 6 to 7 miles to gallon on fuel. When I had this setup, I was using pullrite auto slider hitch with no leveling issues either.

Personally, I wouldn’t consider any GM because of the ridiculous trailer brake controller position. It may be silly, but it drives me insane in my Dad’s truck.

They all make good trucks. To really get into the details of which one is better would be like picking fly poop out of pepper. I like Ram but that is partially because I have a great dealer who looks after me.

Aside from the brand, for that trailer a 3500/350 diesel is the way to go. Yes a gas model will do the job but never as well. A piece of advice...you are not buying the truck for this camper, you are buying it for the next one....

I️ no longer have my ‘15 dmax, but if remember correctly, I️ think on the ‘15+ it was integrated into the dash, similar to my ‘17 Ford.

No complaints on either for me!

No complaints with my 07 Silverado 2500HD. Not towing the weights you described, but am happy with the way we tow our HT 27.5 in NH.

Good luck ! We've got a Eagle HT RSTS and pull it with a Ford SD 6.7 scorpion diesel..Have had NO issues went to Washington state this year and pulls fine . Its just under 10k..We chose this due to its quick response and its very quiet for a diesel. If money was no issue Id go with a new F250 or the duramax I have heard good things about that truck..Theyll all pull the trailer possibly consider a 350..Good luck

There can be a significant difference between advertised dry pin weight and actual. I would not be surprised if the actual pin weight, once loaded with accessories, propane, some fresh water and gear be closer to 2,500 lbs, then add to that the wt of your hitch. What your due diligence will probably show is that with a 3/4 ton you’ll be very close to exceeding that pin weight if you stick with a gasser and exceed pin weight if you buy diesel. Good luck.

I say drive them all and buy the one that you can get the best deal on. I own a ‘16 Ram 3500 diesel Megacab Dually to tow my 5er. However, I drive a ‘15 Chevrolet 2500 gasser quadcab longbed as my daily driver. Both are great trucks in my opinion. I looked at the Fords when I purchased my Ram, but the dealership would not budge on a price (probably because of new aluminum skin) that I was willing to swallow, so I walked. Just drive all 3 and work the best deals you can...go with the one that works best for your wallet. I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them.

I think when you hear ppl talking about their units not being level is usually dealing with the HT fifth wheels. I have a 2015 F250, but my CURT hitch worked perfect with the unit. I am only 1.5" out of level from front to back.

I switched from a 2011 F350 CCLB DRW to a 2017 Chev CCSB SRW this yr. Both diesels. Chev rides nicer. Haven't towed with it yet but I've hooked it up and checked the turn radius. I can get past 45deg with no issue. I don't like to turn more than that as it's hard on the trailer wheels/susp. If there is an issue I'll go to a Sidewinder pinbox. I doubt that a 3/4t will handle the pin weight once you are loaded and on the road.

Yea it is… up high on this left. When every other I have ever used has been low on the right.

I prefer the GM location vs Ford but it's a personal thing anyway. Functionally they are the same. I did like that the Ford kept track of trailer mileage.

As an FYI, the ram does too(up to 3 in the EVIC in my ‘14).

I think it was the 2016 model year and newer where the truck makers raised the height by 3 to 4 inches. Although I'm considering a new diesel truck, this height issue has me putting on the brakes for any purchase just yet.

Asking the GM, Chevy or Ford question is like asking opinions about religion or politics. That said, I tow 13k# with my F-350 and it does an excellent job. I’m just one of those Democratic Methodists that loves Fords.
