Front Cap Paint on HT

I remember reading on here awhile ago about the paint on the front cap of the HT models fading. I noticed the same thing on my 2012 26.5 RLS this past winter. I contacted my dealer in April 2014 (my 23rd month of ownership). They contacted Jayco and got approval right away for a new paint job that was covered under warranty. Good thing. The cost of just the paint job was over $1,800 plus the Jayco decals. If you are still in your warranty period and notice the slightest discoloration, I would suggest you contact your dealer right away.

Did you wax or use any kind of protection on the cap and it still faded? I hope this doesn't happen to our's.

My Eagle has a gel-coat front cap. Am I right in assuming that this won't fade?

The front cap on my HT didn't fade, but it has cracking in the gel coat in enough places Jayco is going to replace the cap. Dealership stated that the supplier had some manufacturing problems.
So give you front cap a look/see once and awhile.

I believe that the gel coat will eventually fade, if the experience of the boating crowd are any indication. Boaters have fought that fight forever and usually try to beat it by taking off the oxidation and then waxing on a regular basis. I haven't done mine yet on my 2012 26.5 RLS, but that's because I am on my third cap. First one cracked above the driver side running light and Jayco replaced it. Then, last summer, apparently I hit something pretty hard and exposed some fiberglass and got some stress cracks so we replaced it again.

Dark Cap Gel Coat issues

If you have a cap with the dark gel coat, odds are VERY GOOD you will encounter the oxidation, no mater what wax or how many times you wax it. At the first indication of oxidation, take it in to an authorized dealer and have them contact Jayco. There are only 2 options for this, 1- Replace the entire cap 2- Remove ALL the Gel-coat down to the fiberglass and repaint it. When Jayco authorized the repainting of our cap, we selected a LIGHT color (matched the side color) and not the original dark color. This was the BEST decision we could have made!!!! On the original dark gel coat the temperature of the cap was over 200 degrees, with the new white painted cap, it has maxed out at 119 degrees. The interior is a LOT cooler with the light paint.

Jayco will tell you that the cap will be warranted but the lighter color paint will not be warranted, but since the warranty was going to run out this August we did not care, AND the RV dealer that painted it has a 5 year warranty on the paint job!

Win win situation for us!

Don
