Got the Trailer 08 355FBHS! next the Truck. will 2500 HD do? what do you have...

Hello Again... first thanks to all that have responded to my other post..All opinions really helped.

Very happy to report that we have selected and have our Next Jayco Camper on hold. Jayco Eagle 2008 355FBHS 5vr. approx 11.2K dry. Do not intend to pull with Tanks full...

Would you be willing to share your Ride and what you are pulling..Would you do over?
Still young so not a full timer yet, maybe one day but in the mean time Probably be camping 4 times a year I hope....Probably 200-400 mile trips one way, mostly flat, maybe a few Hilly trips. In the south so mostly Flat Beach trips except heading towards NC/TN Mountains some times.

Just for perspective I am a Chevy Kinda Guy (no offense intended to Ford or Dodge or Toyota, don't want a war of the Brands)..I am looking at the 07-09 year 2500HD and 3500HD. Duramax/Allison combo. Will be pulling a 355FBHS Eagle, Wife and Two boys. about 11.5K just to keep numbers rounded. Do you pull with a 2500 or 250 single rear. I am going the 4x4 rout after reaching a decision from the findings of my other post.

The SRW will be more practical use for me but want to know your opinion but more important your Real world experience on 2500 Truck pulling 5vr, 11.5k and any stablility issues or anything else that will help me.

REALLY interested in the Short Box and how your 5vr pulls. Hard to find Long Bed 2500 that is not worn out or a plain work Truck.
according to what i find online the 2500HD Duramax can handle about 13K 5vr weight...
Thank you all!

Got the trailer.

We have a 2003 31 RLS (2003) Designer. Loads out at 12,500. Pull with a 2009 3500 SRW w/Allison & Duramax.
Love the truck, engine & transmission. Tow from In. to Az. twice a year. Handles great. 54,000 miles on truck. So no info on longevity.
Good luck.

A 2500 would probably be fine but if you can find a nice 3500 for just a little more I'd go for the 3500. You'll have extra capacity so if you upgrade the trailer in a few years you probably won't have to worry about upgrading the truck at the same time. I don't know about Chevs but there's not a lot of price difference between the Ford 250 and 350. Anyway, my $0.02 worth...

The thing you want to focus on besides GVWR is the hitch weight of the rig. That's where the 2500 may have a problem. You have to add the RV pin weight PLUS the stuff you put in the 5er PLUS all the stuff you put in the truck and that's what your truck is going to carry. I would go with the 3500 it were me..."been there done that"

I'd rather have too much truck rather than not enough truck.

In my opinion, backed by approx. 14 years fulltiming with several "upgrades", You CAN NOT have "too much truck" - We have had a dually after 6 months in a 3/4 ton- As said by another post "Been there, done that" and don't want to do it again - JMHO DD

I have a 2013 351MKTS. It weighs 11925. I tow with a 2006 Dodge quad cab 4X4 with the 5.9 Cummins. We towed from Upper Michigan to South Texas at the end of Jan. We towed thru snow and slush for the first 200 miles of the trip. Not a problem. I put a set of airbags in the rear of the truck set at 35 lbs. Tows real smooth.

For discussion reference, here are the published spec's on the 2008 Eagle 355FBHS:

Weights
Unloaded Vehicle Weight 11,165 lbs
Dry Hitch Weight 2,290 lbs
Gross Vehicle Weight 14,500 lbs
Cargo Carrying Capacity 3,335 lbs

Measurements
Exterior Length 38' 5"
Exterior Height with A/C 157"
Bedroom Interior Height 77"

Tank Capacities
Fresh Water Capacity 46 gals, includes water heater
Gray Wastewater Capacity 80 gals
Toilet/Black Wastewater Capacity 35 gals

If it were my FW, I would be looking at a one ton for the added TV GVWR/Payload Capacity because of the potential "loaded" pin weight. I would guess that in 2008 the actual "ship weight" had to be around 11,600lbs, so a modest ready to camp weight of 12,800lbs (tanks empty) IMO is realistic.., then figure 15% to 25% for the loaded pin weight (depends on one's loading habits), most tow at a 20% minimum. Hitch and TV cargo weight also go against the TV payload.

Just thinking out loud.....

Bob

A few months ago I saw a sight in the side lot at the camping world store. It was a F-150 hooked to a very substantial (and very pretty) 5th wheel trailer. The little F-150 looked almost un-steerable the front end sat so high. I think it was a short bed so it probably had a slider that was unlocked but still. I don't know what the owner was thinking when he came up with his plan but it was a really bad idea.

You are right Ive decided on the 3500 (1 ton) now its down to SRW or DRW. prob do the DRW but keeping option for SRW if price is too good to pass up. Thanks for all the Advice from all the experienced RVers here on Jayco Forum.

Should have no problems

You should have no problem with the truck you want to pull with. I pull a RLTS Jayco Designer with a F250 Super duty Lariat Turbo diesel. With no problems. I would have got a F350 but just could not afford one. You really can't have to much truck. Bigger is better. Just My Opinion

You've got a great combo with that 3500, although, my 2003 2500 Duramax/Allison shortbed SRW pulls, and stops our 2013 365BHS without 2nd thoughts. However, if I was pulling it all of the time, I would personally have a 3500 DRW.

We are very excited. Kids and wife already made reservations at the campground. It's funny when you are used to camping and take a year or more off you really miss it. I had relocated and had to sell my Jayco and TV. But glad to be back in the lifestyle. What a great experience for the kids. Daughter is almost 21 and remember her camping making mud pies while setting under the awning relaxing in the ocean breeze, you Can't do that in a high rise condo complex. Safe travels to all!
