Halogen or LED Lights

I was wondering what everyone thinks about the lighting options. I have a 2012 321RLTS FW and most of the lights are halogen which is fine because most of the time when we are traveling we stay in parks. But occasionally we do some dry camping and to conserve battery power I was thinking of changing the halogens to LEDs. I was wondering if anyone knows the difference in power consumption of the two if any.

Exact numbers would depend on the particular bulbs in question but I think in general LEDs will use substantially less power for the same amount of light. They're also quite a bit more expensive (but getting less so). It might be more cost effective to add an additional battery instead.

LED's are very expensive right now (cheap ones don't last). They do consume a fraction of the power of halogens. Be careful of the color claimed by the LED you are looking for. Some claim their LED's are "warm white", but if you look closer you will see they are providing 4000 degree K color. That is cool white, NOT warm white. Warm white that we are used to with home type bulbs if 3,000 K.
I am of the opinion that LED's do save energy, are too expensive, not good color in a lot of cases, and don't provide the overall quality of light that I like.
I have two LED's in my 5'er at this point. One replaced the #921 bulb in the outside light and another one in an interior wall fixture. Both work OK, but not enough light inside. The outdoor one is fine, but I only did it because the #921's don't last as night lights.

Ed, what brand did you go with for the 921 LED replacement? I did the one over the sink with the Command Electronics warm white and with the upgrade lens they send, it's not only a nice warm color, I am convinced it's brighter than the original.

The LED's do conserve energy but as noted they are not as bright. Some do have a blue hue if you do not get warm white. I do 50% on the grid and 50% off the grid camping a season so I invested in the LED's vs halogen. What I did was go onto Ebay and purchase 1-2 at a time first that met my requirements and pricing options. After testing I then ordered enough to outfit all my halogens. I think I wound up paying about $2.50 a unit. There are much more expensive options out there but I have not tried them yet.

In my kids bunks which has the 921's I use the board type with the adhesive backing. These I had left over from my last TT which had all the double 921 style lights in it. They work fine for them with reading and such. I don't have to worry as much about them leaving them on for extended periods of time.

You should also upgrade you battery bank if you intend on going out for over 2 nights. I have 2 6V T105 size batteries that will support me without worry for a few days should I need to between charges.

I used the WLED-WWHP18-TAC from superbrightleds.com

I have one that is outside and I leave it on at night and 24/7 when I'm away from the 5'er and sometimes 24/7 when I forget to turn it off, . I am happy with this LED. I have a second one in a wall sconce inside. It gives nice warm mood lighting, but that is all that fixture is supposed to do.

Be very careful of LED companies calling something "warm". Don't go by their words, look for color temperature in degrees K. Warm is 3,000-3,500 K, cool is 4,000-4,500 K. Anything over 4,500'ish is going to start appearing blue.

LED companies like to push the range of the term "warm" because cooler temp LED's are easier and cheaper to make than color temps in the 3,000-3,500 range.

I replaced all of the bulbs in my 321RLTS with leds. It was an expensive undertaking, over $400. I got mine from SuperBrite LEDS. They are all "warm white" in color and provide light in the same color temp as incandescent bulbs, they are also voltage regulated which makes them last longer. We boondock for months at a time and to me it is a worthwhile investment. I don't think there is any advantage with leds if you are hooked up most of the time.

Only if you don't think longer "bulb" life, whiter light, a lower electric bill (if on a metered site), and considerably less heat aren't advantages. Another possible advantage is reducing the load on a lighting circuit to allow stealing power for an added fixture, such as more lighting or fans.

Just installed 10 of the LED board type lights with the sticky back, the color is about the same as the incandescents they replaced and the cost on Ebay was 4.44 each. I was so pleased I ordered another 15 of them to finish the trailer.

These are the lights I ordered:

Perhaps any advantage was a poor choice of words, I should have said significant advantage.

Thanks for the input. It loos like I will be on Ebay looking for leds that are cool white, I did'nt know there was a difference. The dealer where I got the 5th wheel sell Led's for different applications starting at $7 each and up. When we are dry camping I do have a solar panel that charges about 6 amps but if you are in a shaded area that is cut down considerably. I do like the idea of using less power for lighting so it can be used for something else like say the heater or the water pump.

I think you want to look for Warm White, not cool white. If you want to duplicate the lighting of the bulbs you are replacing, you need the warm white.

Yep, those work just fine and they're relatively inexpensive. I have a couple now and will add more soon.

We had several of our Halogen Puck Lights blow within the first several weeks of Fulltime use of our Pinnacle.

Also all the Halogen Puck fixtures and the light over the dinning table generate a lot of heat and are hot to touch.

The lamp in the bedroom on the dresser is starting to melt the bulb base due to how hot the bulbs are getting with extended use.

We have replaced all the Halogen Puck Lights, the Dinning Table Light Bulbs and Bedroom Dresser Light Bulbs with LED's.

The LED's run much cooler and provide good light output.

The LED options are getting better all the time as new and better units hit the market.

If you know why type of fixture you have or what style of bulb it takes, you will know. Those lights come with three different connectors for different style lights.

I seem to remember reading some where (yes I can read) that incandescent lights give off about 90% of the energy they use in heat and only 10% in light. That is a huge waste of battery power which is why I converted, I'm trying to light the trailer not heat it.
