I used a stud finger and found two studs to secure the handrail to, the other two anchors are just in the wall board.
The rail is very sturdy, I can pull on it all I want and there is no movement at all.
I put it on the side with the window and light switches since they stick out anyway.
Notice the handrail does not stick out any further than the window curtains.
I made it from some nice Oak from HD and some poly / stain.
The spacing from the wall worked out perfect, does not stick out too far but far enough to get a good grip without pinching your hand.
