One thing with a 5er that size is that you're limited on where you can take it. I'm not a big KOA camper myself, I'd rather be in more remote campgrounds where you have a little more space between sites and a lot more trees.

We view our motorhome as our hotel on wheels. We spend a lot of time under the awning and cooking outside, but it sure is nice catching up on the morning news w/ a pot of coffee brewing on the counter while I'm lounged out on my couch. When I'm on vacation, I want to feel like I'm on vacation.

I tried to trade one off after 2 months but ended up keeping it since they were expecting me to take a 6 grand loss and just bought the other one outright.

I'm surprised it was only 6000, I lost 10k when I did that. IT HURT!

I ended up losing 2 grand on it. 2 camping trips and lived in it for a month.

My 32 foot Rockwood trailer was a chore to tow. My new 32 foot precept MH is a blast. But I have to watch for the low hanging branches.

I'm perfectly happy with my current travel trailer but I do love to browse those giant 5ers on the dealer's lot and at the RV shows.

Ours lasted a year before we traded from the slx 264bhw to the slx 287bhsw, sucks taking a bath on the trade but it's going to make a huge difference in camping enjoyment this summer. Only 36 days till the campgrounds open but I'm not counting or anything

Had a friend who's brand new TT caught fire while headed south from NYS on a two week vacation to Myrtle Beach. They were able to salvage many of their possessions, as the trailer was extinguished with fire extinguishers that he and the group of firefighters he was traveling in caravan all had, but the trailer was unusable. Pulled into a local dealership, drove out with a new unit, and enjoyed his long-planned vacation!

I did research on all the different truck options when we were undecided on whether we wanted a bunk model or a toyhauler.
The Ram 4500/5500 are generally their commercial trucks. You can order them with a traditional bed, or you can get it custom fitted with anything else (some factory, most aftermarket). They don't start out that expensive because most commercial buyers aren't putting in the luxury items that consumers do. Same goes for the 450/550 Cab&Chassis from Ford.
But some insurance companies (not all) still rate the Consumer version of the Ford F450 as a commercial vehicle and want to insure it that way. Ouch!
If I'm paying to insure a commercial vehicle for towing, it's gonna be made by Volvo. And I'm not talking a 90's soccer-mom station wagon.
Anyways, sorry for the hijack. My wife is guilty, but in a different way. We started with a 35' TT and F250 Diesel. She wanted to eliminate cost, so we traded the 2 year old TT for a Popup that we towed with our Minivan. Sold the truck, I got an older, cheap Wrangler. We did that for 18 months until the popup was completely destroyed by a drunk driver. We had total replacement on the Pup, and with the Numbers Wizardry that took place when we traded, we paid that off and made up pretty much all of the negative equity from the trade.
She then tells me she hated the pop-up, wants to go back to a real trailer, and this time wants to do a 5ver. So now I have a F350 Dually Diesel and we have a 377 currently on order.
The only way I'd be happier is if she'd have let me keep the wrangler and get the new(to us) truck.

I don't understand why people say if they trade in after 2mths a year etc that they are losing money or taking a hit. Once you sign the papers on the original purchase you have spent the money. Wether you account for it today, 2 mths from now or 10 yrs of payments the money is gonna be spent. Buying anything is mostly an emotional choice. Accounting for it is a business decision. If you want something get it. As long as you can pay for it it's not costing you anymore to trade today over 5 yrs from now. It's just how the money is allocated.

Good prospective we generally buy camping equipment with entertainment dollars. So those purchases should be valued by enjoyment received. I have gotten great value out of most camping purchases with the exception of first motor home. My mistake and just decided to bite the bullet and trade for the Seneca I now have. Every month when I send my payment in I say better to pay on a rig I enjoy than the class A that did not fit.

Last year before I retired from Camping World sales I had a Customer trade in a brand new TT for a Jayco 23MRB in 1 day. He got the Forest River TT home and called the next morning said "you were right, I should have bought the Jayco". He lost 5k in in one day. However he is happy......

If you trade in early you lose the money because you're basically seeing the depreciation sooner. If you keep the trailer for, say 5 years then you've had 5 years worth of use out of it.
If you trade in early you're pretty much swapping trailers and paying the depreciation sooner along with the payment for the new unit.
Say you keep one unit 2 months. Trade it in and have to pay $6,000 for the wholesale value difference. Now you buy another trailer and keep it for the duration of the loan. Lets say 12 years.
So you have paid the depreciation on the 1st unit and added it to the 2nd unit. Now you're paying the depreciation on two units for the same amount of use.
That's why you lose your arse when you trade in early.
It's all based on the premise that an RV is supposed to be kept till its paid off. Like anything else you buy.
Anytime you trade in you lose because you're getting wholesale. If the BIL bought the trailer for a deep discount (30-40% of MSRP) then he probably didn't lose a lot. However if he bought with a smaller discount then he'll lose more.
As soon as he tows it off the lot it's automatically worth less.
The other way you lose money is if you're upside down on the LTV and the dealer gives you wholesale, but tacks the difference on to the price of the new unit.
If the new unit is discounted say $12,000 and the dealer adds the $6,000 to the new unit to cover the old units depreciation then the bank will still loan the difference because the loan is less than the MSRP. But because you have a trade in you can't bargain as well. The dealer's not going to take a chance on the trade in and needs to cover his butt if he has trouble selling it. He can always unload it at an auction if he needs by giving you wholesale.
Anyway you look at it the BIL is paying more than he should.
It really boils down to what was owed on the 1st unit and what the 2nd unit was sold for.
