Hole Under Stairs

Hello everyone. New to the site - well been reading it for a while, but this is my first post. I looked through the mods and may have missed it.
Has anyone covered the hole under one of the interior steps in hallway? It’s extremely warm in there and just wanted to know. Also, why does the storage area have A/C? Seems like a waste to keep it cool underneath. I am a newbie, so drop some knowledge on me. Thx in advance.

The hole under the stairs is supposed to be a return for the furnace. I’m not 100% sure what it actually does but I keep mine covered during the summer. The ducts you see in the basement are for heat, not AC to help prevent frozen pipes

I was asking about the basement area because it was cool down there and cold air was blowing out of the vent last week while we were at Jamaica Beach RV resort.
