We have a 42 1/2 ft fifth wheel (377) and 90% of our trips are to McKinney Campground in Acworth, GA 25 miles away (45mins). Rather be camping then wasting time driving to a campground.

We camp 20 minutes form house, far enough to get away close enough to still go to work.

We usually stay within 2-4 hours drive one way for weekend or extended weekend trips. We like to go places we haven't been before so each trip is something new. A couple times a season we take longer trips - generally ~2500-3000 miles round-trip and 8-10 days in length.

We do both. Summers we stay close to home, day within 5 hours.

Winter time we take it down to Florida for 2 weeks. The drive isn't much longer when towing vs. solo and is quite a bit cheaper to stay in a State park on the Gulf instead of renting an ocean front house.

Next summer we're planning an East coast road trip for 2.5 weeks. Probably 5-6000km round trip.

Most of our trips are within 2 hours. Local for us while school is in. Kids drive the camping for us. Summer time we take a couple 1 week trips. We try to go whenever we can. Another poster said they camp close to home so they can still go to work. I do the same thing, i go to work and the family stays for the day and camps. Not too for for the drive. When i get off work i come join the fun.

Questions I would ask myself are,
What's my budget to spend? (5er are really expensive)

Will I never travel far from home?
(If the answer no ask yourself why not? That's what there for to travel )

Do I have the right truck for towing it?
(My opinion 3/4 ton minimum for 5er even if its a HT one, check payload)

What floor plan do I like the best?

The reason why I went to a 5er vs my hybird or buying a TT was,
I had the truck already, I had planned this one out a couple of years in advance I had bought it when I owned my x23b.

I wanted more room then my x23b provided so this would have but me in to a 30' long TT which I was worried about getting into the state parks and not sure if I would like towing something that long off my bumber.

I like the storage space and floor layout much better then what the TT provide.

My plan is to tour the USA in it.
As of now the longest drive in a single day with my x23b was 5hr drive. However I did a 10 day 1000mile trip in it which was awesome. Now with the new 5th wheel I hope it makes it easier. I will still limit of driving to 5 to 6 hrs max. The kids and the parents don't like to be in the truck all day. Nice to stop and see stuff on the way.

I did have to save for 2.5 years for the new 5th wheel but this way I am not making a monthly payment on something that just sits next to the garage most of the time. I added the neights spent in my old camper and we probably avg 20 nights a year camping. We use it but not a ton. Maybe the 5th wheel we will use more but with work and school probably not.

It is all on what you enjoy doing and what your plans are. Just remember try to plan for the future you may find yourself traveling further then you think if you have the right truck and TT or 5th wheel.

(Excuse my grammer and spelling errors. I did not proof read this)

Good luck.
Tough decision I struggled with it when I was there.

We have had he wiggle waggle type rv ( travel trailers) and now have a 5er. No matter how often or what the distance, personally I love the 5er for ease of towing and ease of set up. As has been said 5er's come in many sizes and weights. My money is on the 5er for he reasons just stated.

We have been FW owners since 2006 still working part time are trips or 3-4 hour drives also.As far a size we went from a 40' toy hauler, to an 16 Eagle 321 RSTS FW.We don't even notice the difference in size. The comfort in towing we have always enjoyed. What your tow vehicle was designed for may be something to consider! Thanks

I have my FW parked at our 5 acre property that is 50 miles from our house. We just go and camp there every two weeks and occasionaly drive it to go somewhere else. I just put in all the connections and it is sitting on a nice concreye pad which was the foundation of an old workshop.
