Inside step light switch

After my 1st year in my NP 381, still wondering why there is a inside overhead light switch on the fist step? The only time we use it is to show it off to friends and family (as to why?). Has anyone modified this switch for a more productive usage?

The theory is you step up and reach inside to turn on lights before entering the coach.
