Jayco - Thor poor Quality and Disappointment

Hi all, please forgive the ramble.

New posting on this forum but an old salt to RV's and long time Jayco fan. Over the past 40 years I've been fortunate to experience RV travel and own several RV's of all types, sizes and brands. One day several years ago I wanted to go to a fifth wheel "for the towing characteristics". While RV shopping we looked at Jayco and found the quality of the fit and finish to be exceptional compared to other brands. We wanted to start small with a 1/2 ton truck and purchased a 1999 Jayco Eagle lite 223 fifth wheel camper. The 223 was awesome and provided years of trouble free enjoyment. It was small, but had everything needed, and no wasted space :-} and with a few upgrades was almost perfect.
After a few years it was time to seek out more living space. We purchased 2008 Jayco super lite 25.5 RKS which was very similar to the 223 layout, but with more room. Also upgraded the truck to a Chevrolet 2500 HD long bed extended cab. Once again we shopped around we found the quality of the fit and finish to be exceptional compared to other brands. In fact many of the offerings from Jayco Eagle, north point, and pinnacle were very high quality, and best warranty. We knew another Jayco would be in our future when time to upgrade again.
Fast forward to 2017 we began looking for our next Jayco. The Jayco Eagle HT 28.5 RSTS caught our eye. Also the North Point 315 RLTS was in the running. After months or research and tire kicking we purchased a brand new 2018 Jayco eagle HT 28.5 RSTS in December 2018. Taking advantage of year end discounts at the dealer. Oh yes... the Dealer "CW" but that is a whole other tale of horror and despair.
So we pick up our new 28.5 and get it home. Park level and set it up at home under steel RV carport. Than begin to explore our new Fifth wheel in detail to get up to speed on the new systems. After all we did purchase this new RV for our Christmas present, and it is winter... Cold outside.
First warning sign, we notice many on the corner moldings and various trim coming lose. Ok no worries, dealer will fix that. So being cold out we decide to try out the LP furnace, yup that works. So what the heck let try a few winter weekend driveway camping nights to learn and enjoy, right? So Second sign, second night the LP furnace stops? Yup, LP tanks are full, stove works as does the water heater. After an hour of trouble shooting I find the hidden rocker switch on top of the LP furnace. Switching it on and off a few times the the LP furnace comes back to to life. Called the dealer to report this event, dealer says... oh that's a reset switch you can expect the LP furnace trip that a lot? what? Again not my first RV buddy. So we decide to winterize the RV before the real cold get's here and deal with it in spring. So full winterize, cover close up and dream about all fun we will have in this wonderful fifth wheel come spring.
4 months later, April, we uncover, DE-winterize clean and detail inside and outside. Now we notice the most all of the interior moldings and trim are not just lose, but falling off. Upon further inspection we find the once beautiful Jayco woodwork is now cheap vinyl covered junk wood seen in other brands. A list of defects begins to grow longer and longer. On the exterior we notice what looks like the fiberglass walls are de-laminating? Sure enough the walls are separating as the fiberglass is de-laminating OSB underneath, Sigh. So with the 2 year Jayco warranty, just contact the dealer, right? Call dealer CW. service manager says they are swamped, call back in a few months? So we sadly go out on a few spring and summer trips we had planned. Feeling pretty discouraged and very disappointment in both Jayco and CW. Then the slide room seals began to come lose and get caught up and pulled through from the inside to the outside destroying the other seals. The fifth wheel tows nice, we did have so fun but with the defects in the RV present it really did make us think that the thor buyout of jayco might just bring this once wonderful american icon to it's doom. Back to the CW the dealer, finally got an appointment scheduled to get this thing in the shop. 3 months later, dealer calming they are still waiting for Jayco factory ship parts? In the mean time the body shop proceeds to repair the de-laminating exterior walls. They fixed a few of the trim a molding issues but not all. They fixed drawers that were misaligned but ended up breaking the drawer slider on one, and just left it. The hot water heater was removed to work on fiberglass, and the body shop left the doors and windows open while grinding the fiberglass. Yes the interior is filled with fiberglass dust and bits. So CW service guy calls, says to come pick up the RV as they have no idea how long it will take to get parts from Jayco? We go to inspect and pick up the camper, it is a total mess. CW service guy says I'll get it washed, but not until next week. Sigh. We go back the next week to pick up. The RV is a mess, outside walls covered in what looks like rubbing compound and over spray on windows, fenders, trim decals. Dents in the metal lower body skirt where the workers slammed ladders, carts, tools, equipment or something into the sides. Inside is still full of thick layer of fiberglass dust, wood dust and grinding bits. No slide rooms seals were fixed or replaced. Several pieces of inside trim and moldings still lose and falling off. Drawer slider broken. The list goes on...
Service guy says, nothing I can do about it, the team is at an RV show and no one here to clean up? Service guy says just take it home and I'l call you when the parts from Jayco come in? We are so disappointed in our new Jayco and wish we had never bought it. We are so disappointed in CW and wish we had never purchased through them. I am now searching for another Jayco dealer other than CW who may be able to help us get this thing fixed so it can be sold. So is my sad tale of the new RV... again sorry for the ramble/vent. I normally never post on forums but wondered if other people were having these kinds of Jayco/CW issues too.

Sadly yours,

Jay

Welcome to the forum. I’d contact corporate directly and I mean corporate for CW and Jayco. Be polite but direct, express your concerns and the issues you’ve had with the camper and CW. Hopefully, someone will take care of you. Maybe suggest they take it back under a Lemon Law. Good luck. Make sure you document every call, email and in person conversation, hopefully you’ve been taking pictures, if not start immediately!

Sorry to hear of your problems. Like Colorado says, go to corporate. I’ve seen this message in my CW ads and at my CW dealer. Maybe give him a call? You have plenty of legitimate gripes.

I agree. When I had some issues with my local CW, I e-mailed Marcus and within a couple hours, I got a call from the local CW manager and he made things right.

Maybe, just maybe, if enough people start calling and e-mailing Marcus, he will realize just how bad CW treats it's customers and do something about it.

I bought my trailer at CW in Mesa, AZ. I never needed to go back after my purchase. I just found out they are no longer CW, but Gander RV & Outdoors of Mesa, AZ. Just curious if the name change effects the CW warranty coverage, even though CW now owns Gander RV?

From what I've been reading the quality since Thor seems to have gone downhill for some folks, however the appliance quality has seems to have definitely gone down hill when Dometic bought Atwood. I'm also reading about issues with the Dometic A/C units compared with the Coleman Mach they used to use.
I have one of the last models prior to Thor buyout, built in January of 2016. I had a few initial quality issues but nothing too serious. Defect in awning fabric. Furrion system died almost immediately, a shade that broke, and my propane regulator started to leak. All 3rd party components.
No problems with overall fit and finish. Interior moldings and wood (solid cabinet doors) have all held up well through now, our 4th season. We're on a seasonal site and use the trailer approx 80-90 nights a season.

My 2019 Greyhawk was appreciably worse in quality, fit, finish, and appliances then my 2015. I especially don't like the move Jayco is making towards Dometic AC units. And the Bigfoot leveling jacks were far and away superior to anything else (Equalizer or now those Lippert ones).

When I had what I 'thought' was a problem w/ my Coleman I called a mobile tech in the Disney area. He told me they have cartons to the ceiling of Dometic AC units but they'd have to order a Coleman b/c 'they just don't break often'. My issue ended up being the baffle between the supply and return sides of the AC - simple fix. But that tech told me everything I needed to know about Dometic AC units.

Jay,

Your story sounds about like mine except I bought the 315 RLTS. I've owned it 14 Months and it has been at the dealer on numerous occasions for a total of 9 months and counting. BTW the dealer has been pretTy good. JAYCO TAKES 4 TO 6 WEEKS TO SEND OUT THE PARTS.

We went to the Hershey show a couple weeks ago just to look around. I noticed one thing that stood out. of all of the units there the Montana was the only unit that uses solid wood styles on their cabinets, every other unit including every Jayco model uses that wrapped wood or wrapped cardboard just like I have on my North Point. It makes me wonder what else you can’t see that they cut corners on.

A little scared

We have had a Jayco pop up for 25 years. Lots of great memories were made in that little trailer. In August we upgraded to a 25.5 REOK. I have it in CW here in Utah getting a few things fixed. The water heater works on LP but not on electric only. The dinette slide seals were not touching on one side and crammed in on the the other so that has to be adjusted. A wardrobe door was or has has warped and an a drawer has to be adjusted. A loom of wire sticks out the bedroom slide and I have to stop half way putting it out and stuff it back underneath.

Had I known bout and read this forum I more than likely would have not purchased this 5th wheel. However I wonder if Forest River is the same in quality. Correct me if I'm wrong but they are owned by Thor also correct?

It maybe the the industry as a whole that has gone down the tubes. To have every thing perfect one may have to buy a million dollar Provost.

We will see how these first few repairs go. No plans on using it before spring so I hope my experience is good with CW. So far I have no accolades or complaints.

Forest River and Thor are two different companies. Each of them are the parent company of many sub brands, and together they have over 80% of the towable RV market sewn up. Judging by the comments on various forums I would say construction methods and quality are likely similar at Forest River and Thor. But while there are issues, there are also many satisfied customers you will not hear from.

Before owning my Northpoint we owned a Forest River Sierra Select 5th wheel. That trailer was a total pile of junk. It was a running joke and bets were placed as to what was going to break when we took it out because EVERY time we used it something went wrong. We had minor stuff like the furnace not working to major stuff like a wheel coming off at 70mph on the highway and the fresh water tank falling out.

My buddy just bought a 2018 Jayco 29.5 5th wheel and his has been sitting at the dealer for almost 2 months because if the front cap separating from the side and bottom of the trailer and the dealer is thinking the frame is broke.

Smile Jayco Customer Service Exceptional!

Had to share this story...

Listen..things will break on your RV. We bought a 2019 Jayco 321RSTS with Modern Farmhouse in March. Absolutely love the unit! Although there have been some problems. I have no issue with problems, but take care of the issues!

Biggest issue was Schwintek mechanism on kitchen slide. Lots of noise and slide would cock and jam when putting in. Had to work the rocker switch in and out to get slide in. Fixed by dealer in August. Well, don’t you know 9 days into an 8500 mile trip slide begins to jam again. In fact, had to wait 4 hours for Mobile RV tech at Mt. Rushmore to get it in.

A week later, in Glacier the floor literally falls out of dinette slide. Fortunately, when slide goes out it rests on frame rail so doesn’t completely fall out. Plan was to nurse it back to Jayco in Middlebury on way back to MA. Call Jayco Customer Service and get Eagle Rep on phone. He tells me they can fit me in....NEXT JULY! After going back and forth he does not change his tune. Let’s just say I was slightly frustrated!

Get dealer involved and they reach out to Jayco Rep Zach Kline. The next day they ask when I can be there. Make appointment at factory for Tuesday October 8th at 11am. Receive call from Jason Martin, head of Eagle product development to confirm. Jason gives me his cell number and says call when Im close so he can meet me! I cal Jason yesterday morning (Tuesday 10/8) and tell him I will be arriving early (9am). Jason meets me out front and escorts me to the Eagle line building.

Met with Taylor, unsure of his last name and review my slide issues. All Taylor keeps saying is...anything else? We go over many minor issues, bedroom door jamming, leaking toilet, loose moldings, pan drawer opening and slamming island door. Zack takes us to visitor center, offers up Jayco swag, offers to take us to lunch, which we declined due to travelling with our 2 labs, and directs us to a nice area park to relax and have lunch.

While driving to the park we are told to return to factory at 130, repairs will be completed then. We arrive back at 130 and EVERYTHING is fixed. These 3 men spent time with us listening to our concerns and fixed every issue we could think of! Taylor even gave us a care package of caulking for sidewalls and roof, touch up for cap, sidewalls and interior cabinets. They also made us aware of an issue with our dealer installed slide toppers which we be repaired when we get back. Taylor would have made that repair there as well but hadn’t observed the problem till just before we arrived.

I can not say enough about how pleased we are. We love our Eagle and were disappointed with the issues we were having. However, these guys brought us to the factory and treated us like royalty! They resolved EVERY issue we had and then some in just 4 hours! They installed a backup camera on our Eagle as a courtesy for our troubles! Are you kidding me?

Needless to say I am a very happy Jayco customer today! These men understood our disappointment and did everything within their power to satisfy our concerns!

Thank you to Jason Martin, Zach Kline and Taylor! Jayco should value these employees as 3 people who truly understand customer service!

No RV manufacturer can "FORCE" a dealer to do anything since they carry multiple brands. They are all independent dealers unlike the auto industry.

I contacted Jayco customer service and you will have to wait a minimum of 25 to 55 minutes on the phone to get someone to answer. They tried to help but I still have warranty issues that are not repaired. Front cap needs to be painted; floors are very squeaky and the linoleum is loose and not attached. There are a few other problems but I can't get anyone to repair them. Jayco allegedly made arrangements to have the RV repaired at another dealer about 60 miles away. I made an appointment and took the RV there. It sat there for 3 weeks without even being touched. What a joke. I've very disappointed in Jayco, World Wide RV in Mesa, Arizona and Little Dealer, Little Prices in Phoenix. Nobody cares and my warranty is now gone!!

NO MORE JAYCO FOR ME!!

Somebody else may have replied but CW and Gander are all in the same. CW sells for the most part higher end RVs. Part of the reorganization of Gander Mountain and the CW takeover was to open Gander Outdoor stores in certain areas. Same company, same service...same ole same ole...

I looked around on lots of groups before purchasing my 2019 Jayco and trust me, there are stories like this for just about every brand out there. That doesn't make it okay, but it's not just a Jayco thing unfortunately.

We bought a new 30.5RTLS July of 2018. On the maiden voyage there came a rain storm and water was pouring in from different areas on the ceiling. We took it back to the dealer who said that the rear A/C unit was not properly installed. The seal was over the cutout instead of around it, thus letting all the water that was flowing down the roof to go right into the A/C ducts and ceiling.
They relocated the A/C unit and we have not had any more leaks however we have not had a rainstorm like that either. My concern was mold and wood rot. Mold and wood rot is why we traded out other Jayco in on this one! I told them that this had to be leaking for a long time while it was on the lot but they said that it showed no evidence of it. Then I remembered when we got it home after buying it, my son seen some water marks on the ceiling and ask me did it look like it had been leaking but I thought surely not.
Next trip we got to the camp site and when I let one of the slides out I heard a crunch. When I went in I seen that one of the pieces of ceiling molding had feel off and fell on top of the slide. When I inspected it i found that only about a quarter of an inch of the staple had been holding. So I fixed it myself. Next trip the other side did the same thing. But I learned from the last one to look on top of the slides before letting them out. We found carpet scraps, saw dust, plumbing scraps all thru the FW. You would think that paying 50K for a camper you would get better quality. I have owned 3 Jaycos but probably not another one. Tighten up Jayco, It used to be a privilege to own a Jayco. p.s. I hate the on demand water heater.

I think it’s just the luck of the draw and who is putting these things together and how they slept the night before etc...

On my 3rd RV, first I had a Thor class C sprinter, WHAT A POS! We owned it a year. Had 15 full pages of documented repairs and issues. There we’re things not installed from the factory (like the locking brace that keeps the slide from falling out!!!, the bracket was under the bunk mattress, no one knew what it was!!!!!), and things simply falling off the rig EVERY TIME I USED IT!I actually hired a lawyer went after Thor and Thor worked it out with the dealer and fixed everything then Thor gave me a free replacement awning (that I damaged), and another 6 months extended warranty for free. Long enough for me to trade it in. I only listed one issue not to take up to much length on this forum.

Next I had a Winni Travato class B. Great, great product! Great company to deal with. It was just to small for us! Almost Zero repair issues to speak of.

Now we have a 2019 class C RedHawk 25R. So far the issues have been pretty minor. Nothing to upset me all that much. And all taken care of by our dealer, Lamesa RV. They aren’t bad at all. Our service Rep, Kelly Walker, is one of the best I’ve ever had! And we haven’t had to wait any crazy amount of time for repairs or parts. I can’t understand why some are waiting so long for parts and appointments! We had our outdoor stove replaced because of chipped paint, didn’t take more than 2 weeks I believe. My only issue with Jayco is having to call factory service for a part number requiring my vin for any part, then having to order parts from a dealer. After dealing with Winnebago I was spoiled with factory direct parts!
