Kayaks and 5th. Wheels

Has anyone come up with a good way to carry a couple of kayaks while pulling their 5th. Wheel campers? Any way to mount them vertically from the rear hitch?
Thanks

A neighbor at the florida campground where we spend the winter had 2 kayaks and 2 bikes mounted on the rear of his Pinnacle. It was obviously something he had fabricated at a welding shop.

I have neither of these setups but have looked at them both.

Several solutions on the etrailer.com site too.

Blowing up the pic I guess it was not specially fabricated but bought. I see it attaches to the fiberglass and he also had a bumper put on. Pinnacles don't come with bumpers do they?

I went the inflatable route, so I just toss it in the bed of the truck.

I have seen some campers with a hitch mounted kayak rack on the camper that holds the kayak vertically. I'd be worried if the kayak was taller than the 5th that the wind load on it may be too much.

Me, I have roof racks on the truck roof and a Thule Goal post mounted on a front hitch to carry 4 kayaks on my truck roof.

If towing doubles was legal in every state, I'd have a little "recreation trailer" that had the bikes, kayaks and occasionally 4 wheelers on it.

So the Kayaks don't extend beyond the back window of the truck, and they cantilever out over the hood. About how long are your Kayaks?
Thanks for the info.

Seems like a roof rack and support bar on front bumper would be the least likely to avoid any damage to the RV &/or yaks. I saw a guy loading up his 5'r, had decent sized scooter on the front bumper hitch and one or two yaks on a roof rack but no support bar. I believe the yaks were in the 10' range, not the HD fishing type or long sea going types.

Hi Drake,

We use Thule rack and J Bars to carry our kayaks on the top of the truck cab.
Our Kayaks ~9ft long and we have a CC truck. I position the kayaks so the back is just slightly back of the back window of the truck cab. I also have a PullRite SuperGlide FW hitch, so I don't have any problems with clearing the FW when turning.
This works great for the smaller length of kayaks that we have. Not sure how it would be if you have longer kayaks, such as a 12ft kayak.
I've attached some pictures below.

I've looked at the rear mounting racks that jasonmiddlebrooks linked to. Very nice, but also very expensive. If you have long kayaks that would extend beyond the height of the roof, you want to make sure you're not exceeding the maximum vehicle height.

As anther option U.S. Racks makes a Fifth Wheel Truck Rack that would work also. I had a U.S. Racks on our previous truck and they make a good quality product and provide good customer service. I believe this rack would work if you have longer kayaks.

Hope this was of some help.

X3 for inflatables.

Much more convenient for transporting. Just got a stand up paddle board as well to try out this summer.
For our Canadian contingent SATURN Inflatable Boats, Kayaks, Rafts! Lowest Prices in Canada!
is a great website to order from. Very happy with ours.

Cheers
