Landing Gear Inop

Ok, guys. I'm hoping one of you knowledgeable folks can help me.

We have a 2012 321RLTS fifth wheel, and the curb side front landing gear won't go up or down. The street side (by the propane bottles) works fine. We are in a safe place, so there is zero emergency. I just need to effect repairs to the landing gear.

I suspect that maybe the shear pin on the curb side has broken. The problem is, "How do you get TO it??".

We have a generator in the front compartment, and the battery compartment is all sealed. Is it possible to reach the linkage coming from the front storage bay, by removing the front bulkhead??

Any help appreciated in advance.

You should be able to pry the flimsy trim from the inside front storage locker. There are just staples holding it. You said you have the genny so it might be a flame retardant material. I had my street side gear shear right off on the drive shaft from it wiggling so much. Finally scored the pin and with only 1/4" left the weight was too great for it.

Once you pop the panel off you should be able to see the top of the leg. Pop the domed cover off and inspect your top gears. I would not be under it without blocking under the frame. Once blocked have someone activate the motor and see what happens. My gear fell right off into may hand and the whole leg had to be replaced since the shaft broke.

The only way you can get it on or off your TV is by way of jack, DO NOT JUST GO ON ONE LEG!! You need to help it on the damaged side and then pull the pins and tie it up. It will fall out if not ties up and secured. Doing this repair campside would be a challenge if the whole leg is bad and needs to come out.

If your shaft is good then check the pin in the gears to see if one sheared. Does the square drive arm turn all the way across the storage locker? If so then it is the curb side leg that's bad. There is a shear pin in the base of the gear you can tap out with a punch. Also there is an internal gear in the leg you can't see or get to.

Thanks. It's at the storage unit, attached to the TV. No danger of it falling.

I'll have to look and see if I can access it from the genny compartment.

Any idea of a part number for the shear pin?

Looking at a schematic, it looks like just a regular 1/4 inch bolt with a lock nut.

I don't know if this applies to your fifth wheel, but some landing legs instead of having one motor and a bar driving the other leg have two motors, one at each leg. If yours is such a "heavy duty" landing leg setup, you won't have a bar going across from side to side.

I looked at mine and I see one shear pin right near the motor. If the crossbar isn't moving that may be the one. If not the other one is hidden as you said behind the batt box.
Should be accessible by removing the thin inside panel.
Looks like a 1/4 20 bolt about 1 1/4 long.

X2

I had one break on a 2010 321RLTS. Remove your propane bottle and locate the motor. If the shaft going to the other side isn't moving when you run the motor check the shear pin next to motor. I would start there before I would start tearing things apart.

Had this issue with a 05 designer and is as stated above . Be sure to turn the bar going across to get the two legs the same length before you put the new pin or " screw " back in . I also used a nylock to make sure it didn't come back off.

Another tip: There is not much clearance on that pin, so make sure you don't make it to long or it will contact some hardware.
